Kat and Em's Travels
Sunday 5th November
Spent 7 hours on a bus to Rockhampton! We thought Ascot Hotel, our hostel, was strange at first but now we love it! It's like a little house. A TV and lots of videos to keep us occupied. Necessary as Rockhampton looks like it's another Townsville! It's not a typical stop on the backpackers' route so it's dead cheap. We got a large pizza from the takeaway down the road for 3 pounds!

Myella farm stay! The reason I had been wanting to go to a farm was because I really wanted to milk a cow! This didn't happen but we did lots of other exciting things instead. We got picked up at 6.30 and were driven for an hour and a half to Myella. We cooked toasted sandwiches on the fire, mmmmmmm. Not quite like the toasties at uni, a bit burnt but still a welcome change! Then, possibly the funniest moment of the day - we had to find some clothes to wear for riding. It was like fancy dress! I know high waist lines are in but I don't think we've ever worn jeans this high. I can't believe it was fashion once! Then it was the oversized shoes to match, or clash more like and the riding boots. We looked so stupid but it was funny. Then we went to meet our horses. Kat's was called Pacaso because he was splattered with white dots like a painting. Not sure why it was spelt like that. My original hosre was Trigger. I was told I'd drawn the short straw because I looked like the brave one. It was far from the truth! Trigger was very stubborn, he wouldn't move and the bloke even gave me a whip to get him going. That scared me! Luckily some woman was scared so I was given her horse, Whiskey, who was much more reliable. We had both never ridden before so it was quite a challenge to begin with but we got the hang of it and took them for a trot! We were going all through the bushes, it was quite scary at one point as I nearly got knocked off when Whiskey went really close to a tree! Between the group we had to move a huge bull away from the cows and into another paddock. When we got back we cleaned our horses and then went for a swim as we were so sweaty afterwards. Then it was time for lunch. Again we appreciated a proper meal! And then time for our motorbike lesson! Yet again we both had never ridden motorbikes before. Kat picked it up really quickly and was flying around the track. I took a little bit longer! But eventually we were even standing up on the bikes! We went on a 7km ride around the farm, it was quality! Now we both want bikes. We were both graded a C which meant beginners with good basic skills. Still, I think Kat should have got a B. Then there was enough time for a shower before we went back to Rockhampton. That evening we stayed in our cosy hostel with Robby, the mad Sharon Osborne wannabe and watched Empire Records and The Wedding Singer.
Tuesday 8th November
It was another washing day today and then we spent some time organising the remainder of our trip in Australia. It was sooooo hot so we decided to go up to the Rock Pool Waterpark for a swim, a sunbathe and a read. Done a lot of that since we've been away. Later we caught the bus into Rockhampton for a quick look around but there was nothing to see and nothing was open. Apparently some places were shut because it was Melbourne Cup Day, but we don't think it would've made much difference. Then we headed off to Target to look at clothes as we were feeling deprived. Kat bought a couple of tops, will be a welcome change after wearing the same clothes for the past month.
