Kat and Em's Travels
Wednesday 8th November
We caught the Greyhound to Agnes-Water/Town of 1770 at 6.45am, earliest yet! Checked into Cool Bananas, probably the best hostel we've stayed in. They closed the kitchen for cleaning 3 times a day! As soon as we got there we went on a 4x4 tour of the area. 1770 is an up and coming area, it's only had a road leading too it for the last 4 years so it's not overrun with tourists and the activities are really cheap compared with other areas. But the land is really expensive. A guy showed us this tiny shack on a small plot of land and it had been valued at 2 million dollars! We chilled out and read for a bit. almost reached the end of Angels and Demons at this point. I was just as addicted to it as i was the Da Vinci Code. Then we went on a larc with Frank to watch the sunset. I can't remember what larc stands for but it's a bus that floats, it was fun!Especially when it went really fast into the water and we got wet. The beaches of 1770 are really pretty as there are sandbanks everywhere which worked well for the larc. That evening we ate at the hostel as they did $5 meals. Fishcakes, mmmmmm. Then we sat around chatting to some randoms. We met a couple who had been on our Whitsundays boat, a weird German called Toby and an even weirder Aussie called Damian who started preaching at me after a discussion about Dan Brown books. He asked whether I had spoken to Jesus yet. I decided to leave at this point.
Thursday 9th November
This morning we walked down to the beach for our hula hoop lesson (thought it sounded interesting!) but the woman got the times mixed up, or maybe it was us, so we ended up having the lesson back at the hostel. It was well good! We learnt all sorts of tricks like swinging one hoop in the our and another around your waist. It's not easy, i'll show you when I'm back! Then the storm started. It rained on and off the whole time we were in 1770. Luckily the rain kept off when we went for our chopper tour of the area. It was meant to be 3 hours but the heavens opened while we were on the bikes and we were all absolutely soaked so we stayed out for 2. We had to concentrate on trying to see as well as control the chopper so we didn't even see much of the area apart from the kangaroos and wallabies but it was still loads of fun. Much easier to drive than the motorbike but we still prefered the motorbikes. Far more powerful and they had gears! The choppers went up to 70 km/hour. Kat's backfired at one point! It carried on raining all day, all night, all morning. It was like being at uni that evening as everyone sat indoors drinking their beer and watching films. I played chess with Frank. I miss chess!
Friday 10th November
This morning we had a surf lesson at 10.30 so we headed down to the surf shop to sign our lives away. We all went down to the beach where the guy started explaining what we had to do but then the heavens opened again and we had to dash for shelter! Eventually it stopped and we got into the water. And it was sooooooooo hard! They were pretty good at helping us but there were so many things to think about. Like waiting for a wave, then making sure that someone else wasn't going for the same wave (can't remember the surf term for this), then paddling and eventually attempting to stand! Kat got up, i got up on one leg and one knee! There were quite a few injuries as the waves were a lot bigger than normal due to the storm. One girl broke her thumb, another got hit by her board and got concussion. We were OK but aching a lot the next day. Your bones really dig into the board and somehow you get a rash on your elbow! May be from carrying the board. We want to have another go further down the coast now that we know the basics. Afterwards we got a certificate :-) I think we deserved that nice warm shower when we got back! Then we relaxed for a bit. I was declared chess champion. Obviously Frank can't be too good at the game! We were probably on the same level. At 4, Bruce, our pilot came to pick us up. We went for a ride in a 4 seater plane! Kat had a go at flying in the front and Bruce did loads of tricks like weightlessness (bottles of water were flying in the air!) and diving. It was like being on a rollercoaster but having no idea what to expect! We landed on the beach and Bruce told us lots of stories like the time a venomous snake got on board his plane! Then he took photos of us posing on the plane wings, that was cool. Back at the hostel a guy turned up to give people free mud masks so we took advantage of that! That evening everyone sat around drinking and some backpackers played guitar. Was really nice and chilled out, we were so tired after the last 3 days of activity!
