Kat and Em's Travels
We left Hong Kong on Sunday 8th Oct and flew over to Perth, Australia. From Perth we had a domestice flight to Alice Springs in Central Australia to do our Ayres Rock Safari. We finally arrived in Alice Springs around 4.30pm on Monday 9th - we'd been travelling for a very long time! The first Ozzie we met was the guy at security and he was from Great Barr, Birmingham! (can you believe that? From near the Scott Arms for the people who know). From the airport we were picked up by a guy who worked from one of the hostels - a typical Aussie backpackers type - dreadlocks and a strong aussie accent! As we drove into town he told us all about "The Alice" and the Todd River which runs through it (no water though!) There is an annual boat race on this river where the locals climb in a boat shell and run down the river flintstones stylee! We arrived at our hostel - Toddys - and checked into our 6 bed female dorm - was nice to finally have a shower and get changed!! We then went for a walk into the town, which is only 5 streets wide by the way! It was a little eerie, sometimes we were the only ones walking along the massive road into town, such a contrast to the packed streets of Hong Kong! Plus it was a little weird to see the often bare-footed aboriginal people (who don't smell too fresh!) walking around and sitting in the streets. We spent the next day, Tues 10th, resting - caught up on some sleep and had a good wander round the town. We had to prepare for our safari!
