Chamula & Zinacantan Day Trip!! The weather was a bit overcast today so the perfect chance to get a collectivo out to the two indigenous towns surrounding San Cristobal: Chamula & Zinacantan. At around 9:30am I went and found where the collectivos were leaving from and took the first one out to San Juan Chamula. The drive out was nice but unfortunately when I arrived the rain started and did not let up for my entire visit. There was a cool little market I checked out before heading over to the main tourist destination: the famous Church of San Juan. There was a small entry fee but it was well worth it to see all the strange things going on inside this Mayan church: the ground was laced with pine needles and there were 1000s of candles lit and spread all around the place, there were groups of musicians, people drinking and sacrifices being made - I saw two chickens sacrificed inside a church in the space of 30 minutes. I watched with interest as witch doctors lit candles, chanted, drank endless amounts of tequila and then gave offerings - I guess it would have been nice to have a guide but it was interesting just witnessing what was happening. The church was like an indoor party and with no seats people sat on the floor and drank to their deceased relatives. After Chamula I had intended to go to Zinacantan but the rain was getting heavy and I needed to get an expensive taxi so I opted to go back to San Cristobal. I found a nice shop doing BBQ chicken again and couldn't help myself. After a huge feed of guocamole and chicken tortillas I surfed the net and figured out a plan for when I might leave San Cristobal. I met up with Rossana in the afternoon to book our excursion to Palenque but you wouldn't believe it the teachers were on strike again and the excursion couldn't happen tommorow either. Rossana had to get to Tulum by Sunday so she booked her bus ticket whilst I figured I would give it one more day and try take excursion on Saturday - if no go on Saturday I will book bus onwards towards Pacific coast. In the evening I cooked Erick and his roommate dinner: guocamole, soy mince stirfry, cranberry, nut and tortilla salad and an egg stirfry complete with tortillas. Unfortunately they arrived late and with an extra person so I had to try and cater for an extra person. The meal was good and as everyone only spoke Spanish I got a chance to practice my Spanish a little. Later in the evening the other Couchsurfer: Emilio arrived and we hungout chatting for a while before I had to head to bed.
