Mexico here we go!!! It was a very early start today and I was up at 4am getting the last of my things together and having a quick breakfast before heading down to the dock. That old nervous/excited feeling overcome me and reminded me how lucky I am and in about 5 hours I will be reaching Mexico: some place I have always dreamed of visiting. The boat was a little late to arrive at the dock but whilst waiting I was treated to the most amazing sunrise I have seen in months; I literally didn't see one sunrise whilst in San Marcos. The boat came and we boarded, its market day so we stopped at all the small villages around the lake picking up locals. I got to see all the communities and small towns that layered the edge of the lake, more impressive were all the million dollar homes, ashrams, wellness centers and resorts that peaked their heads out of the Forrest in the most unbelievably beautiful scenery I ever saw. The boat arrived a but late to the main town of Panajachel where my shuttle bus was waiting. The bus was big and luckily not full so I has some room to stretch our and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake as we snaked up the mountain. The road was quiet horrific towards the Mexican boarder with speed bumps every few kilometers and hairpin corners everywhere. We reached the boarder around midday, went through formalities, changed money and boarded our new bus. Welcome to Mexico!! The landscape didn't really change much from Guatemala but I certainly noticed a lot more cowboy hat wearing grouchos that typified my idea of rural Mexico. As we headed up into the mountains the weather changed and the rain started but by the time we arrived in San Cristobal luckily the rain had stopped. As soon as arriving I took to finding a hostel; asking a few people I was directed to the main square where I went in search. A few hostels were fully booked and others were overpriced or empty but eventually after an hour I found De Ja Vu Hostel the one I had heard about and for $6 a night it's not too bad. After checking in I went to sort out this money/card trouble I have been having but unfortunately my card had a block on it. There were lots of markets and converts going on around the city but as I was stressing and trying every bank in town I kind of missed all the action - remind myself to relax and breathe like in yoga. I grabbed some refried beans and eggs for dinner and headed back to hostel for a cook-up. The hostel is quiet packed and surprisingly lots of Australians and Kiwis - to be honest I don't like being back in a hostel and so decided to send out a few more couch requests. As luck would have it I got a reply to a couch request and as of tommorow I will have somewhere to Couchsurf. The rest of the evening I tried to work out what I am going to do about not accessing $$$$ and a plan for Mexico.
