Day 1 San Cristobal!!! Up at 6am today to start the day with my daily meditation - even though I was in a hostel I was able to find peace at 6am up on my bunk bed and had a nice meditation. I like hostels in the early morning because they are quiet but when you have a bunch of people running around, yelling and sharing 1 toilet - its not so fun. I had a few hours to kill and the top floor of the hostel had this cool hammock room and on top of that a little area where you could practice yoga. I have decided to take the week off from yoga and instead so some bodyweight training in the hope to get some of my strength back. I did however do a yoga warm-up that I had learned at Kaivalya as it wakes you up and puts you in touch with your senses. At 10am I walked around to my CS hosts house: Erick and chatted with him and his roommate before they both had to head off for work. I then went for a walk to the markets and wow what a maze of new sites, sounds, foods and bits and pieces. I realized I have missed the markets and this market is one of the best and interesting I have ever seen. I brought some atole mix (local corn and spice drink), some strange fruits, bean stuffed tortillas and a few other things before stopping at this popular little taco place in the middle of the market. The guys running the place were hilarious and here is where I put an end to my month of being vegan - I was thinking cooked meat might repulse me now but actually quiet the opposite happened and I started to salivate at the sight and smell of it. I went for one pork, one chicken and one beef taco all stuffed with fried onions, salad and my choice of salsa - out of this world is the only way to describe my first real Mexican food - Tacos. I was actually still hungry after the 3 tacos and noticed most people go for 4-5 but not to push it I settled and headed off before I was enticed by more. The afternoon I spent wondering around visiting tour offices and the tourist info centre; which informed me of the week long festival happening in the city which involves music, dance and art. I had some more tacos for dinner that i made at the house and I think I have already overdone the taco thing - will have to try find some other Mexican food to get into. At 8pm I went and watched the music event that was happening in the main plaza which involved a pretty cool rock band busting out solos on their guitars and rocking out like it was 1980! A great first day in San Cristobal and Mexico!!
