Mexico City Explore!! Today I woke very early feeling a bit better and ready for my first look at the city. I joined Ena's Mum for an early breakfast and then decided to head to the nearby park and use some of the free outdoor gym equipment. The outdoor gym equipment in the parks all over Latin America are an awsome idea and give everybody the ability to workout. My workout was great and I enjoyed watching all the people coming and going, exercising and making the most of their mornings. After my workout I decided to go for a walk towards the city and see the huge Hyper-supermarket which is rumored to have and sell all aspects of Mexican food. The market was ginormous and I spent a few hours wondering around and came to the very obvious conclusion that it was very Americanized and sweet foods and fatty foods had taken over from traditional Mexican foods. I made it back to Ena's around midday and Ena's Mum had organized for us to have an early lunch so that she could take me to her favorite part of the city before she had to start work. It's quiet funny with Ena's Mum as she doesn't understand my Spanish very well and I have real trouble understanding her so as you can imagine this creates a lot of confusion and mid-interpretations. We went to a nice part of the city known as reforma where a very long avenue cuts across the city showcasing some of the nicest gardens, buildings and neighborhoods of the city. Mexico City is truly modern in every sense of the word and is so surprising as most people believe it to be dangerous, dirty and overcrowded. After enjoying the walk along reforma I headed to San Juan market a famous meat and vegetable market known for selling all kinds of strange things. After San Juan I took a walk through the rougher neibourhoods and shopping districts where everything from textiles to electronics and other various goods are sold. The atmosphere was overwhelming with literally thousands of people rushing about the place, bumping into one another and completely self-absorbed in their own worlds. I came to the biggest market in the city known as La Merced - with probably 10,000 stores it would be impossible to see everything but I tried. I wondered around for hours; people watching, getting lost, trying 10 different types of avocados and almost loosing myself in a shoppers maze. As the sun started to disappear I made my way for the metro as the neighborhood I was in: is renowned for being dangerous after dark. I arrived back to the house at about 7pm and was met by Ena's Dad and later her brother. I did some more trip planning and managed to book a flight from Mexico City to the the coastal town of Puerta Vallarta for Sunday. I am happy to be heading back to the Pacific coast and hopefully the sunshine and some beautiful beaches.
