Another day in Puerto Montt with not really a lot to do but the sun is shining and Karina has promised to hang-out after she finishes work. Around mid-morning I heard from Karina and she had a rough night and would need to rest in the afternoon so I decided to walk to the bus stop and catch a bus into the city. The temperature was perfect and there were many people around all with smiles on the face at another glorious day. I went looking for hiking clothes in a number of second-hand stores but unfortunately didn't have much luck. For lunch I went and sat at the waterfront enjoying the fresh sea breeze and the beautiful blue sky's and treated myself to a 30 minute siesta afterwards. I spent the rest of the afternoon wondering around looking for camping gear but unfortunately had no luck. I picked up a few essentials before coming across an old man buying the local traditional dish Humitas - he explained to me what it was and how it was made and had me inspired to make it as opposed to buying it ready made. I brought the things i needed for the Humitas and started walking back to the bus station where I booked my 30+ hour bus ride to Punta Arenas (starting point of Patagonia). The ticket was expensive but far cheaper then the flight and remembering this is Chile the price is normal. When I was walking through the city I heard an English speaking woman calling out to me?? Who could this be? It turns out to be Kim a woman I had added on Facebook lastnight who had met one of the teachers on my summer camp 2 years ago and the teacher had passed on her Facebook contact details- incredible she recognized me from my Facebook profile and the fact there is something like 300,000 people in this city and we run into each other. I chatted a while with Kim and she turned out to be lovely and was going to ask her friends if they had any hiking gear they might be able to lend me. When I arrived back at Karina's she was just waking up from her rest and I told her my plan to make the Humitas which she was thrilled about. Basically I had to strip the corn of the kernels, saving the husks and cobs, blend corn kernels with salt, basil and fry off some onion and paprika and mix all together. I then took the husks and wrapped up little portions of the corn mix and eventually steamed it in a huge pot using the cobs to raise the wraps away from boiling water. We also had some smoked spicy salmon; so I made a quick salad using strips of salmon and the Humitas on the side. The result was a delight for the senses and these were by far the best Humitas I had ever eaten and Karina agreed - the ultimate comfort food. After a bit more of a chat and discussing a plan for Karina's cook-up tomorrow we said goodnight and I made my way to bed.
