HOLA from Spain!!! I am here safe and sound after a whirl wind two days! Backing up to my last few days in Ireland, I actually got to go to college with Lewena and sit in on an anatomy lecture!! I dont know how much she liked having me there because I got her yelled at by the teacher in class by talking to her!! haha We then went where all Irish college students spend their first day back to college - the student bar! It was fun to see what Irish college is like!
On Tuesday morning Lewena and I woke up very early to get me to the airport on time! Many Euros later, I had my overweight bags checked and was on my way to Malaga. The flight was great, except my plan of sneaking another bag on failed, miserably! SO I checked that one too!! haha The flight to Malaga was only 2 1/2 hours long. Once i got there, my bags were quick to come onto the conveyor belt and I got a taxi to my hotel! I met the IES people there and was immediately overwhelmed by them speaking fast spanish to me! haha
That afternoon we all went out for a Paseo through the town and then got a late lunch at a restaurant called "El Pimpi" It was quite different but very good! Malaga is right on the coast so everything was fish: anchovies, tuna, and lots of other types I didnt have the guts to try! Everyone in the program is very nice and from all over the country so it was fun getting to know everyone!
That night we all watched in inaugration in someones room and then passed out early! The hotel was VERY nice! Huge buffets of food, full place settings, wine glasses for everything! There were even servers to take your plates and open your bottles of water for you! It was definitely a nicer hotel than I was expecting!
Today was a crazy day! After a massive breakfast of eggs, every type of toast, churros, fruit, crossiants, and much more, we had orientation activities until our lunch at 3, which was also huge! We left for Granada in the late afternoon and after the 1.5 hour bus ride we arrived!!! The drive was beautiful! Olive trees all over the hills along the road! As we pulled into Granada the Sierra Nevada mountains were GORGEOUS! With the lit up town below the VERY white mountains it looked like a picture!
We met our house family at a hotel and walked with our huge suitcases to their Apartment!! It was quite a sight! We definitely looked like tourists! The Senora's name is Dolores, but she likes to be called Loli because Dolores means pain in spainsh! She has four kids, three girls and a boy. The boy, Juan, is 22 and the only one to live at home still, however she said two of her daughters come home on the weekends most of the time! Juan is a student at the University of Granada, which is the only university in granada with 65,000 students! He is studying physics, german and knows some Engilsh! Loli is also a foster mom to kids and right now she is mom to Lucia, a one year old girl! She is just adorable and is always shouting: "HOLA HOLA!!"
The apartment is great! Its on the second floor, which is the first in Spain (ground floor is floor 0). There are 6 bedrooms, however my roommate and I share the one together! There is also a nice kitchen and family room area! Loli made us dinner tonight and it was delicious! She made tortilla espanola, tomatoes, ham and cheese. She probably has 30 oranges in her kitchen!! her friend has orange trees and gives Loli oranges all the time!
We only speak spanish in the house, and its proving to be a bit difficult to convey the same emotions as you would in english. Humor is hard to get across as well!! Only time will make it better! :)
I'm all set up in my room and enjoying it all very much! We walked to our school tonight to see where to go in the morning and it was very close by! Probably a 15 minute walk through the most beautiful streets ever! There are fountains everywhere and even a red carpet lined walkway up the main street! We are very close to the river Genil too.
Just wanted to let you all know how the first few days have been!! Thats all for now! Hope everyone is doing great!!
