Hola!
Well I just posted some pictures today from my last adventure and some other random times out and about in Granada! This last weekend a group of us IES kids headed up to the Sierra Nevada Mountains for a ski trip! Given that I am not a good skier, and it scares me to death going down the mountain so fast with no way to stop but fall, I opted to go and just hang out for the day! It was very easy to get there – we took a bus to the major bus station and then it was a 45 minute bus ride up to the ski resort. There were soooo many people there it was ridiculous! It was one of the most beautiful places I have seen! The weather was very cold, but the moments you could bask in the sun were enough to warm you right up! It stayed clear and sunny most of the day making it enjoyable to walk around and view the town. Me and a couple friends went ice skating and took a chair lift to the top of the mountain to see the view from the top! It was spectacular!! You could see snow covered mountains all around and then in the distance you could see the lights of the city! Era Maravillosa!! After a few spills on the ice, some igloo adventures and lots of coldness we took the bus back to Granada and then headed for a night out on Valentines Day! There are cute little stuffed hearts in every store window saying “Te Quiero.” They are very cute!
We went to a discoteca called Granada diez where there was a band called “Besos de Judas” (kisses from Judas) playing a concert. We only heard one or two songs, but afterward the band members came out into the crowd for a while. I went up to one of the guitarists and asked him if they were selling t-shirts or other products for their band and he replied no. So I asked him if I could have his t-shirt that all the members were wearing that night with their name on it – and he said YES! Ha-ha So he gave me the shirt off his back as a souvenir! When I told my host mom the next day, I don’t think I explained it well enough because she was a little taken aback when I told her I got a mans shirt at the discoteca! Ha-ha
We rested on Sunday and did homework. It has been beautiful weather this last week – no rain!! Finally!! So Camille and I did some homework in the park next to our house! I have had a few classes cancelled already – making school even easier! There is not too much homework over here so that’s really nice! I just need to remember that I will have some sort of test sometime in the near future! Ha-ha
A group of us are headed to Cadiz next weekend for Carnaval! It is sort of like a Mardi Gras celebration – but with Halloween costumes! We haven’t figured out what we are going to dress up as but it will have to be something that is comfortable because it is going to be a LONG day! We leave from Granada on Saturday the 21st at noon, take a “fiesta bus” (as we like to call it) to Cadiz (on the south west coast of Spain) and then take a bus back at 8 am the next day. The fiestas at Carnaval don’t end till 7 in the morning, so we will stay up the whole night and catch the bus back to Granada in the morning! They say it’s what everyone does…so we are going to give it a try! The reason we call it the fiesta bus is because there is all sorts of activities to fill the five hour bus ride! There is karaoke, drinks, best costume awards, best singer awards, and all sorts of other raffles!
We have finally booked our spring break tickets! A few friends and I are going to Barcelona for a few nights then off to Athens it is! My roommate has a family friend there who is letting us stay in her apartment just outside of Athens! So we are planning to sightsee, travel to some of the Greek Isles, and most importantly relax on the beach!
Some things that have happened around the house lately:
1. Lucia had a fever a few days ago. She was constantly crying – it was not fun for any of us!
2. Loli has been working on making long, bright pink colored capes for her Carnaval celebration with her friends! She seems excited about it!
3. Juan just finished his exams – apparently he got one of the highest math scores in all of Spain! I’m telling you – he is ALWAYS studying!! Maybe I’ll learn a thing or two from him! ;)
4. Loli took Camille and I to the library the other day to show us where it was. Lucia was running around yelling “hola hola!!” It was very funny because I think every seat in that library was taken up with studying students. They didn’t seem to find Lucia as entertaining!
5. On our way to the library something miraculous happened! For the first time in my life, one of my “parents” said yes to my frequently occurring question: “can I get a puppy?” We passed a pet store and there were adorable puppies in the window! I asked Loli if I could bring one home and she said CLARO! (Of course!) It was a very happppy day!! Then I realized – a puppy, a new lifestyle and a crying baby were not all conducive to my success here in Granada. So I’ll just hold onto the thought of a dog for now!
That’s about all of my news. However I did come to think of some other random observances I have had while in Granada. Here they are:
- I have not seen ONE McDonalds or Starbucks while in Granada. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough – but I think I would notice it if there was one around! Granada has kept itself pretty small town if you ask me!
- When people ask me how long I have been in Granada I seem to always say “only about two weeks!” But then I realized – I have been here for FIVE weeks! I left home one month and a week ago – yet it still feels like I just got here! Its crazy how time flies! I fortunately have not gotten homesick – or SICK sick – yet! Knock on wood! (It might be all the oranges that are keeping me from getting a cold!)
Hope everyone is doing well!!!
