Hello Everyone!! The last few days have been busy and exciting ones! After having a few days of intensive language courses, we took a break on Saturday to head to Las Alpujarras - a region south of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Las Alpujarras have become big tourist destinations in the last few years; however it is still a region of Pueblos (towns) that are very remote and self-reliant.
We had a rough start to our morning on Saturday. Camille and I left our house for the Palacio de Congresos, where we were meeting our bus to head to Las Alpujarras. We got a bit confused on where exactly the bus would be and when we saw a bus with lots of people getting on, we assumed it was our bus! Just as we were walking up to it, the bus took off down the street!! It came to a stop at a red light so we booked it and ran as fast as we could with our backpacks on to catch it! By the time we go to it, we looked up to see older, Spanish people on the bus!!! We couldn't believe we had been chasing the wrong bus!! As we turned around and headed back to the Palacio we heard the people on the bus banging on the windows and motioning for us to get on!! It was pretty hilarious and we felt a bit stupid. We eventually found the right bus and started our journey to Las Alpujarras.
The road to Las Alpujarras was a very, very, very windey, small road. I was sitting next to the window and a few times I felt like the bus was going to tip over and I would fall right over the cliff! I then gave up on the sightseeing and took to napping instead! Hehe When we got to our destination, we met our tour guides and started on our way! There were violent winds until we got behind the mountains and had some protection. The foot path we were following wasn't actually a foot path at all, just a place on the mountain we could get some footing! We were hanging off the cliffs the whole way; however the spectacular views made up for it! There are three pueblos in Las Alpujarras: Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira. These small villages were all white houses, cobble stone roads and there were no roads whatsoever! The people living in these pueblos must be in great shape to make it from one end of town to the other.
We got back to Granada at about 630 pm and headed home for a siesta before going back out! My roommate and I met up with some friends from school and had some delicious tapas at a bar called "El Cuevo." There were tons of Pig Legs hanging above our heads as we ate our ham and bread tapas. Next we went to a bar called "Realejo" where there were tons of local, young Spanish people. We met some really cool people to talk with and learned some flamenco dances! A few people there really wanted to speak English with us, so we spoke in Spanish and they would respond in English! It was very fun to talk with people our age and find out the cool places to go and to see in Granada!
Today is Sunday and we definitely slept in wayyy too late!! We got up and then a few hours later had lunch with most of Loli's family. Her two daughters were here with their boyfriends for the weekend, so we got to meet them and all have lunch together today. Tomorrow its back to school and sightseeing around Granada!
Hope everyone is doing great!
