¡¡Hola a todas!!
Well, next week is finals week and my FINAL week in Spain! I can’t believe how fast time has flown by over the last four months! I am procrastinating studying for finals (by writing this blog) because I don’t want to accept the fact that classes have ended and I have to pack and head home once they are over! Of course, that’s not the best strategy for doing well on finals! Haha
I have finished all my classes, topping them off with a Fieston (big fiesta) in my Spanish class! Who says you can’t drink mimosas at 11 in the morning at school? It was very sad to have to say goodbye to our teacher, easily the best Spanish teacher I have ever had. I never once did not look forward to going to my Spanish class all semester (and it was at 9 am…for 2 whole hours everyday!) My teacher handmade me some beautiful earrings for being the Ganadora – winner – of a semester long contest we had going in class!
Last week we had an art visit to the Cathedral with my class. It was absolutely beautiful! Unfortunately we couldn’t take photos, but it was spectacular. It is where Queen Isabella Catolica and King Fernando have their tombs. We got to go underground and see their coffins. There is a statue of them laying down above their tombs where their heads are rested on pillows. It was interesting to learn so much from my teacher that I would not have noticed otherwise. Something that I liked was how the head of Isabella made more of an indent and appeared heavier than Fernandos because she was “the more intelligent one.” There were lots of little interesting facts like that which made me really enjoy it!
Last weekend we took a wonderful trip to Cabo de Gata – a town on the southeast coast of Spain. We started at the most southeast tip and hiked 9 miles up and down mountains, stopping at secluded beaches along the way. The weather was wonderful, the water was pretty warm, and we all had a great time!! IES organized a big dinner after all the hiking and then took us all to a bar they had rented out for us! It was fun to have all of our program directors out at the bars with us. After a very long day we all went back to the hostel.
We had the entire hostel for just IES which was nice, since the doors to the rooms didn’t lock. The next morning I had wished that they did lock…here’s why: At 5 am, our room door opened up and someone came in. I didn’t think anything of it, until that person got into my bed and started pushing me against the wall. For some odd reason, I thought it was a guy called Alejandro. I asked if it was him, and he responded yes. I continued to tell him that he had to leave, that I wasn’t comfortable and he had to get out. He wouldn’t budge and I kept offering to move to his bed if he would just tell me where it was, that way he didn’t have to move. After about ten minutes of me quietly trying to get him out of my bed (may I remind you, it was 5 am and there were 5 other sleeping girls in my room) my roommates woke up and started trying to tell Alejandro to leave. Camille had thought I was sleep walking, and was telling people not to worry. Finally, Clare, who was on the bunk above me turned on the light and opened the door. She looked over the bunk and gave a very surprised look…then I looked over at the person next to me for the first time. The guy next to me had blonde hair (Alejandro is part Native American with black hair). After being scared out of my mind, I realized it was my friend Seth and started asking what he was doing there. He mumbled that he had followed JD into our room….freaking everybody out that now JD was apparently in our room! He wasn’t, Seth finally woke up, and left our room. He had slept walked to our room and didn’t remember any of it in the morning! He thought it was all a dream!! By 520 in the morning, all 6 girls were up in our room cracking up at what had just happened. We had lots of fun making fun of him the next day for his sleepwalking adventure.
That next day, Saturday, we went snorkeling off the coast of San Jose. It was hilarious getting into our wet suits, full gear from shoes, to jumpsuits, to jackets with hoods! The water was not cold at all by the time we had sweated into our suits! It was nothing like Hawaii snorkeling, but cool nonetheless! We headed back to Granada that night.
On Sunday, I went to Malaga for a soccer game between Malaga Club de Futbol and Racing Santander. It was fun to see the uber-excited fans at the game and to watch “our team” (Malaga) win. Once again, we had great weather – in the upper 70’s, low 80’s. After a long weekend, I started my final week of classes and it just flew by!
This weekend we have a flamenco show put on by our own IES students. Flamenco is a class offered by IES and their final performance is open for us all to go watch! So Loli and I are going to watch Camille! Then its exactly a week from Monday until I head to Ireland!
I will try and write once more before leaving if I find the time! If not, see you all in just a few short weeks!!!
Hope everyone is doing splendidly!
