"Patience Iago" - Dan (to kid during chess) 28 July 2012
After our two hour minibus from Phnom Penh we arrived in Takeo and headed to a local guest house, checked in and headed to the NFO orphanage ( http://www.newfuturesorganisation.com/)
After one of the kids took Dan, Phil and I apart with games of chess, we headed to the NFO centre for dinner. We then headed for some karaoke with the other volunteers. After three hours of hearing some wonderful voices and others which were not so good too we headed back. As we left, one of the locals told us to take a big stick in case a guard dog attacked us on the street with no street lights!! So I grabbed a stick and led the group with my best Luke Skywalker impression. I can only assume that the dogs saw my Jedi stance and thought "f*** this, he looks mental" because we didn't even hear a bark out of any of them.
Next day, after a great lie in, we headed back to the orphanage and Dan, Phil and I ended up in a football match - England v Cambodia.
England took an early 5-2 lead and it all looked pretty comfortable until Cambodia realised that England goalkeeper Dan Kendal had a weak spot. He was scared of the geese. Cambodia started pushing the geese in the direction of the England goal, forcing Kendal to run and leave an open goal. Within a couple of minutes it was 5-5 and we had to ban the use of geese. From here, Cambodia hit their stride and eventually we ended up at 9-9 and decided on next goal wins. After a couple of attempts each the ball fell to my feet. I looked at Dan, then Phil, both were marked. I looked at goal and the Cambodian keeper was off his line. So I went for the long range effort and as it flew in to the back of the net (well between the flip flops) the crowd went mad (well they would have if there had been one). Dan and I couldn't help but think that if Stuart Pearce was there we would have been flown back instantly to represent team GB.
Last night we chilled and played some cards before getting up early this morning to pop to the orphanage one last time. Some more defeats at Chess for England before getting our minibus down to Sihanoukville, which we are on now.
Hope everyone back home is good.
