We arrived at Sukhothai after the train journey and after a few people visited the 'happy room' (toilet) we jumped on a couple of Songthai's and headed for J and J's guesthouse. After Jack introduced his furry monkey to Jen we sat down and had a group meal, drinking the cheap Chang Beer (6.4%) which we would eventually come to live off in Thailand. After necking a few we starte a game of spoons. For anyone one who hasn't played its basically a game where a few spoons are laid out on the table and when you get a set of cards in your hand you grab a spoon. The person without a spoon is then not allowed to drink for the next round. By the end of the night it turned vicious and I still have the scars to prove it!
The next day we did a temple tour on bikes which we stylishly made into choppers. We saw many Wats or Temples but the hot afternoon sun made us lose interest quickly. We returned to the hostel for a refreshing return back to the bearable heat of a shaded sun lounger and pool. We found it funny, yet slightly disturbing, when we saw a quite obvious Thai bride i.e. 20 year old Thai with a 60 year old Dutch Guy. It was clear she was in it for the money as when he said he couldn't swim she immediatley headed for the deep end and taunted him.
Later that evening we took our chances and headed for the night market to sample some local cuisine. This turned into a bag of fried silkworms, which surprisingly we managed to keep down. They tasted simliar to dodgy pork scracthings, even down to the satisfying crunch. After this we needed something to wash down the lingering taste. This is where we discovered the delights of the wonderful 7-11 bar. 25 Baht (40p) would but a large chang and there was plenty of street curb for 5 of us to relaxon. We even had the entertainment of witnessing a motorbike accident, but then again they're not that rare in Thailand.
LAMPANG
We arrived in Lampang late morning the next day. AFter dropping off our bags we headed out to some more temples, namely Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, and then followed this up with more beer. I think you may be seeing a pattern emmerge. That night we went to a strange bar where we ordered a large bottle of 100 Pipers Whiskey for around 10 pounds including mixers for the 4 of us. What amzed us most was not the price for the whiskey but the oversized, talentless band that played Evanessence while muttering the parts they couldn't translate. Obviously we all started filling in the gaps for them. We finished the druken evening with Mick waking up the entire hostle by barking at the caged guard dogs and then trying to climb over the open gate.
Now this may sound like all we did on thus tourn was drink, but thats only partly true. The next day we got our money's worth when we visited the Elephant Conservation Centre.
