The inital plan was to land in Johar Bahru, the most southernly point of mainland Asia and then take the short walk over the Sinapore crossing bridge to arrive. This plan was ruined however when we found out the centre of Singapore was a good hours bus ride away and we wouldn't be able to walk it. As we arrived in the centre we stared our search for accomodtion. There are 2 areas for backpackers to stay in singapore, China Town or Little India. After spending a long time trying to find a place to stay we got a nice hostel in China Town.
Almost immediatly we were disgusted by the prices as they were so much higher than what we had been used to for the last 2 months. Eventhough it was quite a bit cheaper than back home we sulked over the prices of meals and in particular beer. It turns out this was just what we needed to break us into the expensive living costs of Australia.
The fisrt night there we heard about a large muslim festival that was thaking place that evening. It involves all muslims in Singapore, and dictates that they have to walk a set track all around the streets for several miles before arriving at a temple to give milk to the gods. We decieded to follow some of them on their journey but at some point our roads crossed and before we knew it we were part of the parade too. It was a funny and strange experience looking around and just being swarmed by people all dressed up in their traditional outfits carrying huge pots of milk on their heads and giving us surprised looks. After a short stop at the temple we turned back and became salmons swimming upsteam against a crowd of people.
The following day we took a trip out to the Singapore Bird Zoo which boasts the most types of birds in any one place. We saw Every variety from Eagles to Penguins and Flamingoes. We went to one show their called Birds of Prey. This had some great moments in it such as when huge eagles swept down and barely missed your head, infact they came so close to hitting you in you didnt duck youd get a faceful.
We also went to Catalina Island. This is a large beach resort / amusement type place for the rich families to come and stay for a while. It was so expensive, nothing was free except the shuttle bus, which we jumped on just for the sake of it. Theres nothing much to really say about it, apart from how it had some nice beaches and a cool cinema screen made from projecting a video on to jets of water. After a while we took the cable car over to a viewpoint to see the whole of Singapore at night. Thats just about it for a couple of days there and the next day we left for Perth Australia. Our time in Asia was complete.
