Today I must have walked 500 miles! Kid you not. My feet are knackered and my calves are buring (lucky because Im eating bread, pizza and pasta like its going out of style)
Today we covered the known and not so known cities that were destroyed by Mt Vesuvio. Pompei, Oplontis and Herculaneum. The last two are not as well known, but certainly just as stunning. The pictures I have been attaching over the last couple of entries are shareware so only give you a general overview of what the sites look like. I am amazed how well they look considering they have literally been to hell and back.
Pompei especially is incredibly well structured and layed out. It would have been amazing to see it in its original glory.
We had a guide called Salvatore (Sal to us, by the end of the day anyway) who was literally 4 foot nothing, bald, hilarious and he has the best accent. When we offered to take him to lunch he said he would need to take a wet check, e meant a rain check. Mean while Im in the back of the bus roaring with laughter, as was he once we explained the translation. He was so passionate about what he does, you can tell he loves it. A really popular part of Pompei is the Brothel, which sounds wierd. But the interesting parts are the murals above each room. Our guide, Sal, explained that they showed the customers, both men and women, what the prostitute would do. These pictures are very intricate and ummmm detailed shall we say. Never the less that kept us all entertained.
The other two sites Oplontis & Herculaneum are both stunning, sometimes a little more than Pompei because they were destroyed in different ways by Mt Vessiou different things in each site were preserved differently. And because they are less known, they are not as busy as Pompei. Stunning mosaics, huge swimming pools, sophisticated drainage and plumbing - the works.
All in all an amazing day! Tomrrow we are heading further south this time to see the city of Agropoli and Paestum.
Ciao for now
