Today was a sad day, as we had to leave Lipari. I think we all wanted more time there, it's so beautiful. But alas, more adventures await our weary group.
We boarded the ferry from Lipari pretty early as we had a lot of ground to cover. Our first stop, once we reached Sicilia, was a place called Taormina. It's right on top of a hill, and is mostly well known for the beautiful Greek theatre it has. I was told it still gets used for performances and operas, which would be amazing as it is really huge and has an amazing view of the city below it. It would be quite a sight all lit up at night. That took the better part of an hour, then came the shopping! For me it's mostly window shopping at the moment as I am saving my pennies for Paris and northern Italy. This is the first place I picked up a couple of things for the famiglia though.
One of the other things this town is really famous for (at least in Italy) is their cakes and the amazing things they do with marizpan - like whole fruit baskets, sea creatures like prawns, I even saw a huge marzipan lobster. It all looks amazing and the detail is incredible.
I had a funny moment in the men's Esprit shop too. I was checking out what they had and having a broken conversation with the shop girl. Both of us laughing at the other, when she picks up something she thinks would look good on me - bless her, she thought I would fit into a M, I cracked up laughing. This led into a conversation about me coming from Australia and that we only have the Alto and the Grande clothing for our blokes. It was very sweet.
From there we got back into the bus (I hate that bloody bus by the way) and drove for a few hours to finally get to Agrigento. Our first stop before the hotel was an ancient Greek ruin site, with amazing temples dedicated to the gods like Zeus, Athena and Hercules. Our guide's name was Claudio, and he has the most amazing way of pronouncing his English words. He really drags out the vowels, it's pretty cool to hear. He also had a lisp which I have never heard spoken in Italian! An interesting and very knowlegeable guy, which made for a fun afternoon.
We've just had another 6-course snack and it's time for bed. It's just hit me that I leave the group in four days, and start my solo adventures.
I'm up for it!
Nitey nite,
JR
