Urbino
So we left Ravenna on Wednesday hoping for quiet roads and a peaceful drive.
Took a slight diversion off to see, we hope, some Great Bitterns and had to explore the off road scene in Italy. Actually not too bad but directions were a little hazy so I ended up having to backup for about 800 yards as there was no obvious turning point when we reached the gates.
As for the Bitterns they were not in evidence, sadly, so we departed for the drive past Rimini and San Marino for the hill top town of Urbino.
Now I may have referred to Italy's roads before in uncomplimentary terms. And I have to say that I was wrong. Wrong only in the sense I was not rude enough! We have chosen to use the national roads and avoid autostraders but their condition is nothing but dire. Pot holes, cracks, broken foundations are just a part of the problem but makes for a very uncomfortable drive. Coupled to the fact that the journey past Rimini is also unpleasant with lots of factories and lights and roundabouts I was pleased when we turned off near Pescara and went inland. The road was no better but the scenery improved a lot.
One thing about Italian drivers is that one needs to adjust to their driving styles. Its not that they don't obey the speed signs, they just think it means that it is the slowest one should drive. I did see a lorry had been stopped by the police for speeding and the police carried automatic weapons! Its not that they will pass you, they will almost anywhere and certainly with little attention paid to road signs. Thus, one has to be on guard all of the time!
Anyway, Urbino has one camping site so it charges….a lot. Meryl was so amazed she told the owner that t was very expensive and he shrugged his shoulders! It does have magnificent views of the city and our plot is large but we have very little electricity - 4 amps- so only the computer works and no WiFi. So two days and then we leave for Assisi and Perugia
