Mileage: 12363 to 12625
The day began early as we wished to get to the port by 0715. However, a detour to a newsagent to get the Rugby Paper delayed us. (Had to read about Exeter's stunning last minute win which guarantees them Heineken Cup Rugby next year…Come on you Chiefs. Also wanted to check out Gillingham Anchorians and low and behold they get promoted next season which is great news.)
DFDS being the new boys on the dock meant….no information as the departure time came and went. So delayed we only left at 10 am. It was the wind, we were told but it looked no worse than usual! Anyway, breakfast and we were off down the road en route to Lille and Luxembourg.
Our long and winding road was hard going with the wind and the van/tank drank fuel like it was water! Once at Dunkirk, however, things improved and the drive from there to Luxembourg was fairly easy except for the poor state of the roads in Belgium. Could that be because they had no government for many months? Pot holes, broken barriers, very poor surfaces made for some discomfort.
One bonus for me was that for the last part of the trip today I got to play a CD. Yes music as I drive although Meryl probably thought it was noise or a severe racket! I had treated myself to two new CD's in Exeter on Friday and Faust was the one I played. No, not the opera but a German, or as the English had it, a Krautrock group of the 1970's. Enjoyed it. Next stop Neu! But in the meantime has anyone listened to my selection as shown on Facebook yet? I would be interested to hear your comments.
Campsite for the night was in, just, The Grand Duchy, but the site is anything but. However, its only one night and tomorrow we head south towards Innsbruck so we can cross the alps asap on Tuesday and get to Lake Garda. Hopefully we will then have some photographs.
