Urbino
Having spent last night looking at the city as the sun was setting, today we get to see it. But first the bus and that was fun. We caught the sight seeing spectacular form outside the campsite. I was a touch concerned since it seemed to be going the wrong way but the drives had responded 'Si' when we said 'Urbino'.
So we set off for a tour of the hills around the city. The views were spectacular and one could see for miles: lush green with rolling hills and valleys, small villages and a real sense of being in the countryside. We had no idea where we ere going but enjoyed the views. After about fifty minutes, we got into the city, a direct journey of perhaps two miles but what fun!
The city is a delight and full of medieval stone and brick buildings which give it a special character. Although there are some cars they are not obtrusive so we wander in the roads. As its on a hill its not flat but our walking is limited so its not too awkward.
The visits involve more art of the Renaissance period ranging from some locals to Raphael. He was a local but most of his paintings are long gone. His house was interesting. However, so far all of our visits wherever they have taken place have had to run the gauntlet of school parties. Today over 300 children were in the town. Although generally well behaved they were a little noisy at times which makes the quiet contemplation of art hard work. I have also noted that in the galleries etc there are few places to sit and look at the paintings so ones feet take a bit of a bashing!
And today Meryl had it for the frist time since we left home. An Italian ice cream!!
Good indeed and this was followed by a Jamie Oliver Risotto which was also good.
