Day 5: April 19th
A few thoughts
Language
Today I listened. Strange to think many believe I don't listen but today was different. We sat on the train to Verona. A few other passengers. But one overpowered the early morning quiet. He was speaking. Well he seemed to be shouting. I have been persuade by the many that Italian is a gently, lyrical language, the language of love and delicacy so the sound was strange. He shouted. At someone I could not see. It was a harsh, guttural sound. Almost crude and callous. Rude even.
I had watched the Italian police series called Montabaldo and found the sound of the words hard and harsh, hurried and lacking in grace, I thought but today was real. Not TV. Yet it was harsh. I moved seats to avoid the sound but it continued. Why was he like this in public?
Then she laughed. Oh, not what I thought at all. Now, who said it was a pretty language?
Town Planning
Why do Italian towns look so good? Verona in the centre is beautiful. Turn a corner and you see streets and buildings that are a delight to the eye. They reveal a shape and colour that pleases a gives a sense of the history and the past that is this town. The piazzas are open and delightful, full of life and without the trashiness of some modern developments. Almost hidden within the ancient facades are shops and cafes. We had lunch near the Duomo that outside appeared as but a door but inside was a pleasant and pleasing place for coffee and sandwich Italian style.
Wine and Food
After our wine of the other day I did not feel the need to imbibe gain. Beyond plain ordinary, there seemed no point in drinking poor wine with no taste.
Until today.
Verona had a street market full of local produce and the impressions were good. Cheese, bread, olives and…wine. So we had a little degustation; a Rosso Veneteo. It was drinkable, with taste and a goodish nose. Even a shop and a vineyard we can visit. Tonight we tried it and, yes, it stood up to the journey.
So tomorrow, we might make a visit to buy a few bottles for home
