Day 21 May 4th
Today we left Urbino and made the short drive towards Perugia and Assisi
It was some drive. After leaving the campsite the followed the bus route we had taken the day before up into the hills away from the city. The idea was to take some photographs and see the views from the roadside. They were wonderful in the early morning sunlight. The bright green of the valley and the clear blue skies showed off the area to the best!
Then after doing some shopping in local supermarket (where the 'boss' was pointing out to the store manager her failings in a very public manner which I thought was rather rude - she saw that I saw and we had a glance!) we set off along the rural roads of Umbria and the Apennines'. It was a lovely drive, probably for the most part above the snow line. It was twisted and hilly but the views magnificent.
Gubbio is not, the book tells us, on the tourist trail so we hoped we could walk the streets quietly. That is after finding somewhere to park. Anyway, the town sat on the edge of the hills and was quite small. Of roman origins, it also had lots of old stone buildings dating back to medieval times. Climbing through the streets was not always easy but mercifully we were not competing with hordes of children; only a few! But…..not on the tourist trail meant cars in the streets and this was bad news. Its a shame as the town is delightful and would be so much better without the noise and buzz of engines.
Now we sit in a campsite about 4 kms below Assisi. As we approached Assisi from as much as 12 km away it was directly in front of us. It certainly looks impressive sitting on the hill and tomorrow we will take the bus and make our visit!

Ray looks interesting, very narrow streets though , as is usual with ancient towns always look a bit run down, any gladiators about?enjoy and dont get into aggro with the locals=(the boss)
