Day 8
Last day in SLC. Grandpa Nate cooked a good breakfast then after sitting around for a while as Josh was typing an essay for a college app, he went on a run and I rode next to him on a bike. It was a really tough ride with a crazy long hill, but it was good to get some exercise. Then we drove downtown to see the temple and all the buildings around it. It's all quite amazing and elaborate with a lot of symbolism built into the architecture. On the way to the temple we stopped at this awesome health food smoothie store called Jamba Juice that was really awesome and was what my lunch consisted of. We got back at about 3:30 and helped Grandma Carolyn get ready for the big family reunion tonight, lots of chair moving and food preparing. Everyone started getting there at about 5 and about 20 people showed of which I remember maybe four of their names, it was all quite overwhelming to be an outsider in the midst of it. Josh and his dad played bag pipes and snare for everyone (third time I've heard it on the trip), and two of Josh's cousins sang "For Good" from Wicked which was very good. After that though it got really strange because Grandma Carolyn invited this girl and her Dad to come. Apparently when she was ten in late 1999 she went into diabetic coma and had a stroke that destroyed the left half of her brain and all the doctors said it was medically impossible for her to survive so she stayed in this coma and literally at the border of death for three days, but on the fourth day she just woke up and asked for some food and then the next day she walked out to the car and they took her home, but apparently Christ showed her the entire story of his life as it happened in those three days and when she woke up she could see spirits everywhere and could interact with them and she can supposedly see the auras of people. Her dad told most of the story but she was completely in her right mind and talked like any other teenager but seemed to get distracted randomly and would have long pauses when she was remembering the stories of the things she's seen. It was all very weird and kind of uncomfortable but still really interesting... the strangest part of all of it to me though was that I am absolutely positive that I've seen her face before and not like in a picture or video. But anyway after that Josh and I threw the Frisbee for a while, twice I had to jump the fence and get it out of the neighbors' yards. Cleaned everything up after everyone left. Then we packed our new trailer for about two and a half ours, till 12:30 local time. Off to bed now because we are on the road again, to Idaho, tomorrow.
