Day 5/6
Lets see, I typed this all last night on here but the internet lost connection and deleted it all... so lets see if I can remember everything...
Yesterday we woke up and left Gunnison at 10:30 to drive to Salt Lake. It was mid 40's when we woke up and in the desert of colorado/utah it got to the mid 80's but now its settled comfortably in the 60's. The majority of the trip was on the beautiful twisting turning roads through the rockies. The colors of the trees and rocks and the power of nature to carve out the ravines we drove through is truly amazing. At one point we stopped at a scenic pull off next to a coal mine that was very beautiful with the tracks, river at the bottom, and steep walls. They had a sign there at the pull off that said that Butch Cassady robbed a coal company store at that location and got away with $8000 of gold and silver. Josh and I climbed down the rocky side of the road to get closer to the river and get some awesome pictures. I looked as hard as I could for snakes but I couldn't find any :-. I guess thats probably a good thing but I've been pretty desperate to see some wildlife. Saw a farm that didn't have any crops but was being watered, there was no livestock, but right in the middle of the bright green field was a lone antelope. It was the first one I've ever seen and the whole thing was quite surreal. As the ravine opened up to the Salt Lake Valley at the mouth of the ravine was a bunch of the massive new windmills. It was an amazing sight and they were all arranged to catch the wind as it rushed out of the ravine. Most people see the new mega-mills as a nuisance I think just the whole idea that people are starting to get energy by taking advantage of the power of nature instead of polluting and interrupting the natural progression of the world like we have done for so long, is quite a beautiful thing (the modern design is snazzy too). Josh's passenger window doesn't roll down which makes taking pictures hard, my polarized lens get rid of most of the glare but they are still constantly getting dirty from the long times on the road... even though I clean them every time we stop for gas. We ate dinner at a cool local chain called Wingers right at the base of the mountains. Watched big storm coming in over the mountains with awesome lightening. On the way through the valley to SLC we saw a very large plane being escorted by 4 fighter jet, really strange sight. Got to Bonnie's mom's and her husbands house in the east suburbs of SLC at about 7 local time. They are really awesome people, it is really nice to have an adopted family when I have to be away from mine for so long. They live in a nice condo in the posh part of town. Grandpa Nate cooked a really good breakfast this morning that ill write about tonight and today we are going go-kart racing!
Breakfast: potatoes eggs and sausage, cooked over the fire
Lunch: Nutri-grain bars (I'm convinced the Gonzales' are camels because they have the most random and unpredictable eating habits and are fine with skipping meals)
Dinner: Ribs and Boneless chicken wings from wingers with their famous "Amazing Original Sauce." All really good, ribs better than the wings though.
