Started the morning early with a circuit then headed off to Nimbin for the Mardi Grass festival.
The festival is all about legalizing marijuana and originally started as a protest 16 years ago. It now occurs on the 1st Sunday in May each year and has around 10,000 people attend.
When we first arrived in the colorful town we were very overwhelmed.
Lots of grubby hippies with dreadlocks smoking pot in the streets and dancing to loud dance music.
Each shop was prompting the legalization of Marijuana and selling hemp products, pipes, beads, clothing, flags and bongs. There was a small police presence but that didn't stop most people from smoking their joints in public!
We watched the 'Hemp Olympics' which involved 'bong throwing' which was hilarious!!
Other activities included the Joint rolling competitions (speed roll and artistic roll),plantation award and guess the correct grams awards.
A big parade which included Gunja Fairies, the Queen of pot, the Polite police and a 10meter inflatable joint passed through the main street surrounded by a huge crowd of pot smoking hippies yelling "free the weed".
A very funny, interesting day, although I think Mel and i were slightly stoned (passive smoking) because we went home and munched out on chocolate!
Highlight today: watch the bong throwing event!
