Heres a few highlights of the time I spent living alone in the one man shack. I call it a shack because theres no plumbing, and only one small lamp for when it gets dark. A very cultural Sami market in the local town one saturday meant I was wandering around looking some beautiful traditional dress accessories, eating reindeer kebabs, and taking a dry sled ride pulled by eight huskies. A delivery of food for my small refrigerator made its day also.
On 5th September I saw my first display of the northern lights which was a big surprise, but very beautiful and relaxing. AAA (And Absoutely Amazing).
Fortunately, regards to the generosity of a neighbour, I was able to try some genuine reindeer steak one afternoon for lunch, and it did not disapoint one bit. And thanks again to him for the ox steak a few nights later after I helped him rescue his truck, which was broken down on a mountain top.
The deffinite highlight, the one that made this endurance of patience and survival worth it, was the one day my neighbour visited asking for some help to bring down his truck from a mountain. He has two of them, which he bought from the Norwegian army a few years ago. I was doing some serious off roading now, through rivers, mud and over stones. Past reindeer, bright orange birch trees and windy plains. For two hours I perfected my off roading technique with a smoky coffee and cloudberry jam break half way.
Cloudberries are a berry that grows only in bogs in the far north, they have a lovely orange colour when they are ripe and have a similar formation to a blackberry. However, their flavour is nothing like any berry I had ever tasted and lots of people dislike them, but I enjoy them.
And after missing my escape bus the morning of my flight south, I hitch hiked for the very first time in the my life, and live to tell of it.
