We now find ourselves in Breizh which is the Celtic for Bretagne (being the French for Brittany). The place we are staying at is situated between Dinan and St Malo on the Rance river. Its an old house which has been renovated and we;re helping to complete a couple of Gites converted from the old barn in the backyard. The house is quite nice and during WWII it was inhabited by German soldiers. The current owners found some old ammunition of theirs durig their renovation about a year ago. Most of our tasks here range from ladscaping, painting, carpentry i the appartments and Mr. Fixer-man also busies himself fixing things.
Our first taste of Brittany was Dinan, a stunning medieval walled town with windy streets and buildings made of Thick timber beams and pillars. We were invited by our host to linch in a crepperie. Its based around two courses, beginning with a Galette which is the same as a crepe only its the French for a savoury crepe. Then you order from the crepe menu, which is a sweet menu.
We've been treated to a few lovely days exploring the area and some highlights of our stay include a visit to a wine fetival in Rennes where we both succesfully walked away with a fine white wine from Alcase and a very smooth wine from Chanties.
Just over a week ago we all took an excursion to the island of Bréhat. It is an old style island-town where no cars are allowed and only tractors (very small at that!) are drivn through the skinny one lane streets. If the day was lovely and summy the island would have been like a visit to the mediteranean but in the middle of winter no one is around and all the shops are closed. The wind howls around corners and you better watch you dont get caught in a shower.
Today both of us visited St Malo and the day was perfect. Sunnny, calm breeze. To be honest, theres no a lot to do after strolling arond the walls (which is lovely), since the old town is not as spectacular as Dinan. We trapsed around the centre looking for fishing gear and took the last bus back so we were able to see the scallopers return to port after a good day at sea off St Malo.
