At the top of the Charantes stands an old lime kiln, not used for 50 years and now inhabbited by various species of owl. Next door, a French farm house with a shed and barn hiding a busy road and creating a haven inside the property for the 30 odd chickens and 6 or 7 cockrels.
Surprisingly, the weather here is not as nice as north in Brittany and we sored a few cold windy days and some snow on two occasions. Luckily, our main task over the two weeks of our stay was lighting giant bonfires and clearing land.
Along with the owls and chickens is the outside cat Fudge and the indoor dog Molly, who grows hair not fur and barks and owls and doorbells (by hair I mean that she never sheds fur and has to say farewell to her tight white curls a few times a year)
The highlights of our stay here were the times when evening sun shone to the tops of the high walls of the lime kiln and a bottle of Brittany cider was shared between two watching the sun set.
