Yesterday we had a bit of a slow start. Did a little housekeeping and sat in the sun at Town Beach. Town Beach is a lovely little beach directly in front of Roebuck Bay caravan park. Beautiful torquoise water contrasting with blue sky, golden sand and Kimberley red dirt. This caravan park is by far the best situated park in Broome. As a holiday maker I would choose this park over the others because of the waterfront views alone and because you are only steps from the water. On the edge of the park is a little cafe that provides meals and coffees. Nearby a lovely playground for the kids. What more could you ask for?
The tides yesterday were huge - 9 metres high and 1.16 low. This was very noticable when we boarded the pearlugger Intobi for our sunset sail on Roebuck Bay. We stepped off the pier to board the boat at one level and step back at the end of day on a level metres lower. Such huge tides make it difficult for large boats.
The Intobi tour was really enjoyable. We were picked up on the Intobi bus and taken to the boat. Both Ryan and his partner Amy have lovingly restored this vessel to a beautiful state. The timber used makes the boat look so authentic. I have never been on a boat like this before. The downstairs area was set up as a museum that provided artifacts and pictures about the Broome pearluggers. As we sailed around Roebuck Bay it was very easy to imagine those before us that spent their lives on boats collected the valuable pearl shells and finding the jewels within.
The afternoon sky became very cloudy. This was great as it kept the harsh suns rays from burning us however it became clearer as the afternoon wore on that we would not see a classic Kimberley sunset. The wind also dropped which meant we needed to use the motor. The early pearluggers would have been becalmed in the bay and would have just had to wait for a change in wind to get home. I would love to go back again and do this cruise as I am sure a classic sunset, a glass of wine and good food would have changed the atmosphere of the whole cruise. However both Tim and I thoroughly enjoyed the sailing and just being out on the bay. Ryan and Amy have put together a wonderful cruise; one that was well worthwhile including in our holiday plans.
