Today Tim and I did some site seeing around Broome. We decided to hire a little car to get around. Broome is so spread out and the weather so hot it is impossible to cover what we want to see on foot.
In the cool of the morning we walked the 2 1/2 km to Chinatown with the purpose to rent a car. While we were waiting for a Barina automatic to become available we visited the locat shops to soak a some of Broomes history. We found a great little cafe in Jimmy Chi's lane that made awesome breakfasts. We waited for the hire car while having some local juice concoctions, bacon and eggs and coffees. They were delicious. Afterwards we walked through the lane reading the historic plaques that depict aspects of Broomes wild west history.
Shopping in Chinatown would be nothing if we didn't visit the jewellery shops to see the local pearl jewellery. These shops were impressive. The pearls were magnificant when combined with local gold and talented local artists. One piece worth over $19000 combined large pearls and gold nuggest into a lovely necklace. I had to take a picture which you can see in the album. I was told that the necklace was the best value because the weight of gold on current prices had appreciated since the necklace was made.
At 10am we picked up the hire car. After visited the local museum and catching up on some pearling history We headed for the deep water jetty of Broome and walked the 1km path to the deep water point. The gates were locked so we just had to look over the fence. We saw a large turtle floating under the jetty but didn't spot any large fish. It is amazing how far out over the shallows the jetty reaches until water deep enough to dock a large boat at low tide. The building of the deep water jetty's had huge impacts on Broomes economy in the past.
Tim and I wanted to swim at Cable Beach again before we visited some of the furtherest areas of the peninsula. The tide was half way to low and the surf non existent. Braving the thoughts of box jellies and Irukandji jellyfish, Tim and I ventured in for a cool dip to ease the opressive heat. Unfortunately there was no surf - just totally flat. Although the water was cool and refreshing, it is hard to see why Cable Beach rates on a world scale in the top 5. Queensland has much better swimming beaches than Cable Beach. Yes it is pretty however for swimming and surfing it just is not quite in the league of beaches in Queensland and Northern NSW.
We didn't stay too long out in the hot sun. After a coffee on the foreshore we made our way out to Gantheaume Point to try and find some dinosaur footprints and see Anastacias pool. Unfortunately the tide was too high for the footprints that only become exposed on the lowest tides. There were some examples that were created to show visitors next to one of the rocky outcrops and Anastacias pool was empty of water because it fills only on the highest tides. The surrounding landscape is ancient and the red rocks are in total contrast to the blue ocean and the white sand. The colours combine beautifully in all our photos which you can see if you check out the albums I have created on the photos tab.
