In the cool of the afternoon we wandered from our Sanctuary Apartments down to see the sunset on Cable Beach. The suburb of Cable Beach is an upmarket area with lots of lovely modern holiday apartments and restaurants. Our accomodation was about a 1km walk from the beach. The area reminds me a little of the North Shore of Oahu but more Australian. As you approach the beach you can just feel there is something really special to see ahead of you.
We arrived about 5 o'clock in the afternoon just as the sun was changing colour in the western sky. There were many others arriving on foot, bycycle and car. Obviously going to the beach in late afternoon is the thing to do. As you reach the top of the sand dune the magnificent seascape stretches as far as the eye can see. It is truly beautiful.
Cable beach is a beautiful white sandy beach. As the tide was low it was quite a walk to the water. Near the life saving club is a lovely restaurant that has a take away that serves coffee and fish and chips. In between the cafe and the beach is a long grassy area with table and chairs. We ordered a seafood basket and coffees and took up residence to watch the sun set on the western horizon. Watching the skies changing hues and eating fish and chips on the beach was definately something to remember.
Walking along the beach in the distance are the camels that take tourist for a ride to watch the sunset. On the walk back we caught up to the group ambling along the footpath in a long line. We chatted to the handlers who said they ran camel rides every afternoon between 3 and 4. Maybe a camel ride would be a fun thing to do over the next few days.
