Before leaving Broome we made one more visit to Cable Beach to have breakfast at the Cable Beach Club resort. The restaurant at this expensive upmarket accomodation has a view through to the beach via a grassed ampitheatre on the lawns foreshore. We ordered the full breakfast menu and sat at one of the front verandah tables. There was nothing at all special about the buffet breakfast. Just a very average "mess food" choice of dry bacon, sloppy scramble eggs, backed beans toast etc. The continental breakfast consisted of cereals, fruit out of cans, juices, dry croissants, coffee and tea. If it wasn't for the view the $28 breakfast would have been a real let down.
The view on the flight to Kununurra was spectacular. The red mountain ranges and gorges contrasted with the clear blue sky. I had a window seat on the east side of the plane which allowed me a different view to the flight down to Broome. It is amazing how vast the country is in this area. Very few signs of habitation dot the landscape. Even from the air the rivers still show signs of the massive wet season. From above it is easy to see how they carve up the landscape. We flew near the Bungle Bungles but not over them. When we return one day in the future we will have to go for a visit. This time round we won't have the time.
We were picked up at the airport by Discovery Caravan Park and taken to our holiday cabin. The unit is really smick compared to the caravan where we stayed in Broome. The park is in a lovely location on a creek that feeds into the Ord River. From our verandah we have a lovely view of the water. The park is well kept and has a lovely feel about it.
Julie from "The Barbeque Boat" cruises picked us up late this afternoon to take us to the cruise boat. It departed from the river about 1km away. We had a small group of people on the tour which allowed us plenty of room to move around and easy access to all levels of the boat. The two tour guides were wonderful. It was easy to see they had a passion for where they live and what they do. Tim enjoyed talking about the agriculture in the area. I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the relaxing boat ride down the river.
We spent a lazy afternoon winding up the river, enjoying the scenery and looking for crocodiles. The boat motored into Lily Lagoon and another area they call the swamp. I saw my first crocodile in the lagoon, a small freshwater one. They aparently are everywhere in the river. Locals don't seem to be too bothered by them and swim and ski in the water. Freshys are supposed to be more scared of people than people are of them. They also are supposed to go in the other direction. Rarely do the saltwater crocs come into Lake Kununnurra. Saltys tend to be found downstream of the dam wall.
The cruise was a sunset cruise that promised spectacular scenery of a Kimberley sunset on the water. The sky was clear and the guides predicted some nice scenes for photos. As the sunset the colours of the surrounding landscape changed to beautiful reds and purples. It was easy to take lots of photographs. I didn't want to miss out on any of the spectacular colours. Cruising down the river in the afternoon would have to be one of the very best things to do in Kununnurra. I can see why people who come here tend to stay for a long time.
Tomorrow is our 33rd wedding aniversary. To celebrate tonight we decided to visit the Pumphouse restaurant on the river. It is hard to believe such a lovely restaurant exists in this place miles from anywhere. It obviously has a great reputation because there were many people having dinner and the place was booked out. We had a reservation as I had made a booking 2 weeks in advance. We sat on the verandah and overlooked the river. Our meal was lovely. What a great way to finish off another wonderful day.
