This is certainly not our first weekend in Paris, and it will not be the last, but it may have been the first time we have had a trip to the French capital as a Christmas present to each other . . . . even though this was March!
Travelling on the Friday evening we joined the Eurostar service at 2001 from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. Travelling in Standard Premier we arrived into Paris at just after 2315 (local time) and then hopped onto bus 31 that stopped pretty much right out side our hotel in the Monceau district.
The Pavillon Monceau Hotel was a very good 3* hotel and at around £80 a night the room rate also included a rather sumptious breakfast that set us up for the day ahead. We would certainly stop here again as the location was handy for getting around Paris but it was also far enough away from the tourist sights of the capital to feel a bit more local.
On the Saturday morning we wandered from the hotel to the Musee dOrsay, somewhere that we have never visited, but also somewhere that we have wanted to see for many years. The museum itself is housed in a converted railway station with the ground floor being at what was platform level. The renovation itself is fabulous and worth the €13/£11 entry fee in its own right, but to get to see some fabulous artwork by Renoir, Monet, van Gogh and many other artists was a nice addition.
We actually spent over four hours at the Musee d'Orsay and when we emerged onto the streets it was clear that the rain, sleet and snow had set in for the afternoon. We made a slow trip back to the hotel via a couple of bars and Printemps (department store) to escape the weather.
Saturday evening saw us vist the 'Grande Bistro 17eme'. We have dined at another of these establishments in Paris before and the set price all inclusive menu at €44/£39 a head and included an aperitif, a three course meal, a bottle of wine and coffee. For Paris this is very good value although service was not as friendly as our visit to the La Muette branch.
With our Eurostar service back from Paris at 1637 on the Sunday we spent the morning wandering around the Monceau area of Paris. Just walking around the back streets, stopping for a coffe (or hot chocolate) at a local cafe, is something we very much like to do. We did pass the Arc de Triomphe on this walk but it was nice to escape the throngs of tourists as quickly as possible.
Sunday lunch was had at Fratelli, an Italian restaurant, that was just around the corner from our hotel. This was really nice experience with great freindly service, tasty food and a pleasant atmosphere. We would certainly return to this restaurant if in this area of Paris at some time in the future.
After the nice lunch it was soon time to head back to Gare du Nord making use of bus 31, because it was so handy, to get our train back to London. Once back in London we made our way to Euston and travelled back to Derby via Birmingham as this saved nearly an hour on our journey home as trains from St Pancras were diverted due to engineering works and it would have been a three hour trip.
