So far I am in awe at the beauty all around us, each place unique. From the beauty of the San Juan National Forest as we crossed Colorado to the views at the top of Mesa Verde where we were able to see for miles and glance at the peaks of many of the Fourteeners. To now the interesting landscape in Arizona with Hoodoos, Utes and Mesas sticking up everywhere and the redness of the land. It is all so hard to catch through the lens of a camera, especially since we are not photographers. All I can say is God is amazing and I am blessed to be able to experience it.
We are at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area near Page Arizona staying at the Wahweap Marina and RV Resort. It's a huge complex with Hotel, Campground and Marina on the shores of Lake Powell.
Lake Powell connects the San Juan River to the Colorado River and it was created by the Glen Dam - which stands at 710 feet tall not to out-do the Hoover Dam, as a reservoir to provide water to the area.
Today we took a boat tour that came out of Lake Powell in Arizona and went up the Lake into Utah to visit the Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The monument is the tallest natural bridge at 290 feet and may have the largest span 234 to 275 feet.
The ride out was close to 2 hrs first on the open lake and then swerving through the canyon. We then had to walk about a mile to reach the monument. It started to rain after we reached the picture perfect point where you can stand with the Arch directly behind you, so we did not finish walking to the end of the path. We returned to the boat and waited for the time to sail out, by that time the rain had stopped.
On the way back we made a stop at a the Dangling Rope Marina - a floating marina on the shores of the lake where boats can come to get gas and supplies. There is also a gift shop and an outdoor cafe. After leaving the Marina we got caught in a huge thunderstorm with hail. The captain had to slow down the boat and everyone on the top deck had to run down. The huge storm created "waterfalls" all over the canyon walls and the water was flowing into the lake like chocolate veils.
The plan for tomorrow is to go visit Antelope Canyon and then drive to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. However Gil liked this area so much that he requested we stay the night here. I stopped at the Campground office and they were happy to extend us a night, they said all we have to do is come by the office before 11AM the day we are scheduled to leave and pay for the extra night if we want to extend again.
