After sightseeing in St Louis we headed out and drove 310 miles. The plan was to drive enough to get a head start on our long trek to Colorado, but I decided to drive a little longer to get passed Kansas City so that we would not be stuck in morning rush hour traffic the next day. Gil was not too happy with another late night drive, but I promised it would be the last, at least on our way there. Besides, he gets to take a nap while I do all the late night driving.
I found Deer Creek Valley RV Park in Topeka had space that night. The park is close to the highway and has an access controlled gate, so late arrival is not a problem.
We pulled in just past 11 PM and after an adventure trying to find our checking package by the Deer Lamp we made our way to the site. You see - most parks have a "drop box" usually by the office door where this sort of information is left. I assumed the brop box would be located outside near a deer lamp as I was told. We looked all over around the building and could not find a box or a deer lamp. It turned out the package was sitting by a deer lamp on a table inside the entry way to the lobby area of the office - it took us a while before we thought of peeking inside the glass doors to figure this out. The thought of checking if the door was opened had not crossed our mind, we were actually peeking in to see if we saw any sign that indicated where this deer lamp would be. It was dark out and we were really tired at this point - I am glad we finally found it.
The park is in impeccable condition, with paved roads, level concrete pad sites and new very clean bathrooms with a private changing area separate from the shower and hooks (this sort of thing is important to most people visiting campgrounds). This made it for an easy setup since we only need to hook up electricity to run the AC.
Tomorrow we will head out to Colorado.
