Ok, sorry I haven't wrote on this in forever but I completely forgot about it oops...which means I have quite a lot to write about.
We had Culture Day at the home. This was basically an event where all the volunteers got split into country groups, either Scotland, Germany,South Africa or America, with each group selling different things including cakes, food, jewellery and other crafts. And during the time of the Culture day there were several performances such as some of the children played drums, others danced and one sang. Then all the people in the Scotland group, as well as a few others (to get a better number) had to perform some scottish dancing which was quite funny. We also got involved during the childrens october holidays in a volunteers day. Because most of the children had gone home for the holidays, leaving only around 20-30 here, we had to organise things for them to do and it was decided that we would create a fun sports day with games such as the wheelbarrow race.
On another day all the volunteers (who weren't working) were invited to a braai (south african bbq) which was pretty cool. Getting there was pretty hectic though because we had around 20 volunteers going and only 3 cars which meant 8 people had to pack into one car... which included two girls having to sit in the boot of the car!
Work has started getting better though, I am stillon nightshift but I have also been given a bunch of other duties to do. On a monday I have Toy Library with one of the younger children which is basically working one on one with them paying games to see what stage of development they are at and helping them improve at it, I also have Computer room on mondays to help children with their homework. I have also had the chicken project passed onto me, so I have to help look after and make sure people are feeding the 4 chickens that we keep in the CHILLI unit of the home (On my first day I had to chase them because they escaped and it is not as easy as I thought! those chickens are quite crazy and whenever I caught one and put it back, it would escape while I was catching another one!) and on a friday I get to go with 2 children to horse riding which is pretty fun.
I am still as clumsy as ever it seems..while I was trying to climb over the gate as it was closed (which we aren't supposed to do oops..) my foot got caught and I ended up hanging from it by one leg :| I now have two lovely coloured bruises on my leg thanks to it haha. I also still have rather red sunburn on my back..from almost a month ago! so it seems it must have been a bad sunburn as it still hasn't healed ):
I have also realised how much I take food for granted back home! We get regular-ish donations of food and the other day we got a huge tray of eggs and everyonne rushed to get some, leaving them basicallly all gone by the time the day was ended. It was quite funny but I was rather happy to have gotten some eggs to make some egg fried rice and french toast.
Being scottish and living here can get rather annoying sometimes...I always get jokes about playing the bagpipes and wearing kilts haha and EVERYONE always asks about my last name and always ask "does it not have mac at the start?" when I tell them... three or four people have asked this and seem to believe that all scottish last names must start with mac haha
Two days ago has been one of the scariest yet! Me and two other volunteers were walking out in Durbanville at night and it was basically empty, there were no cars or anything so it was super quiet when suddenly this one lone car slowly starts driving next to us. At first I thought nothing of it but then this guy opens the door and gets out, holding a car wheel spanner thing..idk what it's called but basically a metal pole thing. He then starts yelling at us in Afrikaans and threatening us with his "weapon". I was terrified and thought he was going to attack us but thankfully one of the others got him tocalm down and leave although he does have a cut on his chin thanks to the guy poking the thing into his face. The guy looked pretty drunk though so hopefully we never encounter anything like this again!
I am really tired and cannot think of what else to write so shall leave it at this for now.
