A very social day! Met a guy on the subway who bought me a coffee! It is easy to strike up random conversations here, I am travelling alone but meet lots of people during the day, sometimes leading to drinks! I explored the little Italy soho area, actually the Chinese have moved in on the Italians turf big time and they all want to sell you copy handbags. When you get into the Italian quarter proper, it is a cheesy collection of gingham tableclothed restaurants. After stopping for canoli I moved on pretty quickly to soho! Full of funky shops and great restaurants and interesting street life it was much more my cup of tea. I found a Spanish deli where you could try almost everything, just opposite where Heath ledger lived and died.
Had moroccan for lunch and was sitting at the table where the chefs prepared the food - great theatre, great food. I spent my afternoon walking the streets trying on shoes and clothes I could not afford, but looking is free! I returned to times square as I lost most of my photos and chatted to a black man about how it used to be so seedy you would come in groups of 5 or more to visit, now it's a tourist Mecca of billboards and broadway shows. The atmosphere was even more electric from the fog we have had today.
Dinner was mystery pot luck get on a train any train get off at a random station and stop at the first decent place - which happened to be spice, an asian restaurant. I was seated next to a NY couple who had just returned from living in australia and nolstalgic for the lifestyle. I joined them for dinner and they left me with their half finished bottle of moet when they had to cut the dinner short due to a sick child. Cannot let good champagne go to waste. Another amazing unpredictable day in NY!
