It's raining it's pouring.... It's starting to annoy me as it is not the nicest weather to be hanging around parks and walking the streets! I headed out to madison park to see the flatiron building and the market stalls. The flatiron building is built on a triangular slither of land and is very beautiful. Opposite it is a cluster of market tents with mostly ethnic food - streetcart Mexican tacos, Belgium frites, tea ( scarce around here!), spices and chutneys, all very good. From there I walked around the gramercy neighbourhood, green, beautiful old buildings, great restaurants and a beautiful private park.
I had lunch at "friend of the farmer", organic beet and fetta salad, potato cakes with apple chutney and French press coffee! Next stop union square, union of many streets, home to a fresh food market and people enjoying the park space. I have figured out the noise to make to get squirrels to come running literally to my feet, a class of schoolkids saw and I showed them how to do it, and got great photos with them and the squirrel.
I had a final look in the shops - I have picked up some makeup (so cheap), 2 pairs of casual walking shoes, some clothes and some foodie stuff (caramel sauce, organic maple syrup). I have packed my box to send home the guide books, food and unecessary winter stuff, and have ticked off my very last things to do and places to see in the lonely planet.
I got chatting to a guy at the hotel who got me in to a private party, and he dropped the tidbit that George clooney stays there when in town as it is hip but discreet, and apparently he is hotter in real life. As I have not run into him I can only assume he is holed up in his lake house!
Dinner at the library room, starter of mac and cheese (not the burger but Americas other obsession, macaroni and cheese), then a roast chicken main and a bottomless glass of prosecco all for $35, will miss the cheap prices.
