G'day folks! Hope you've all had a good easter and are all well.
Kerry and I finished our last day at work yesterday, which was mixed with both sadness, as we have absolutely loved working at the Australian Outback Show (AOS), and also with excitement as we will be off seeing new things again. We spent the week working at Wet and Wild during the day, having something quick to eat and then rushing over to AOS to start work at 6:30.
The show is superbly written and Lee Kernagan (a big Aussie Country star) wrote the songs. Our job there was to serve food and drinks to the 1,000 strong audience. The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic as the audience were included in the show, as were the staff, through crowd participation. Both Darren and I got to ride in the horse-drawn carts around the auditorium one night at the end of the show, which was basically a theatre in the round. That was really fun and the 'cowboys' and 'cowgirls' were all friendly. The show itself is something that I would love to watch from beginning to end, but at $95 each we couldn't justify it. We only got to see about 20% of the show, whilst we were serving the customers. It was all of our jobs to raise the excitement of the audience, so we were encouraged to clap along with the music, cheer the participants of the competitions and take part in The Hat Race, a race where the objection is to get a hat from one end of each row of the audience to the other. It's a simple and fun idea that gives you a chance to act like an idiot and run around screaming.
It is as far from working in an office, in a suit as you could get! I love the fact that country music is played all night. I feel at home there and the constant climbing of the stairs is great exercise.
Considering we wanted jobs that would entertain us, as well as pay us, we could not have found better holiday jobs. We are both sad to leave Surfer's in a way but are looking forward to the adventure ahead. We reluctantly packed our belongings into our car yesterday and left Miami Caravan Park, this time for good. Last night was the first night of sleeping in the car, at the Trucker's rest area in Coomera. We stayed there a month ago! It wasn't as bad as I had anticipated, as it is much cooler now (about 21-24 degrees) so the car isn't as unbearably hot (until the sun rises). Tonight we're having a leaving drink with some of the people we have made friends with at work and then tomorrow we begin the epic 1700km drive north to Cairns! We shall no doubt both keep you informed of the adventure ahead and we are both looking forward to seeing crocs at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, on Wednesday, and eventually making our way into the real Australian Outback, for a spectacular adventure of our own!- comments
