Hello there everyone, it's the Wandering Two on the road again! We've uploaded quite a few new pics on the photo section of us on the gold coast in our uniforms and some other new stuff. Make sure you take a look through there please! Wondering what we've been up to the past couple of days since we left the Gold Coast? Well here's a little update for you all:
Monday 16th April
Spent the day mooching around the shopping mall in Southport and Kerry managed to get a doctor's appointment for the following day as her gums have been hurting her all week. In the evening we got dressed a bit smarter (if ripped jeans count as smart) and headed down to Australian Outback to say some farewells and we ended up joining in with their team trivia night for a while. We found out that know absolutely nothing about Australian Sport questions but we were good at all of the European geographical questions! We invited everyone to join us down the pub later where were meeting some of the people from Wet 'N' Wild. We then drove down to a place called The Grand Hotel in Labrador and met Haley, Erika and Angela from Wet 'N' Wild. We had our first actual Pint since arriving in Australia as they measure beer in Schooners, which are slightly smaller. The night went really well and all the guys from AOS ended up meeting us down there after their trivia night had finished and nearly everybody went home completely trashed! We stayed the night on Scott's sofa, which was really nice of him and far more comfy than the car.
Tuesday 17th April
Kerry visited the doctors in the morning and was told that her gum's were hurting her because she had an infection, so he prescribed her some anitbiotics to get rid of it. We registered with Medicare and ended up getting half of the appointment money back, which was pretty good as the appointment cost $60. We left the Gold Coast area in the afternoon and drove all the way up through Brisbane and ended up staying a few kilometres south of Beerwah.
Wednesday 18th April
Woke up early to call Rob back home and accidentally ended up waking him up as we had forgotten that the clocks had gone forward. NEVER wake up a sleeping bear too early! Arrived at Australia Zoo and managed to wangle getting in as students, which saved us $40! Sweet! The day was brilliant and it's a far nicer zoo than even the one in Sydney, with staff stopping to chat about the animals as they pass by and loads of Water Dragons freely wandering around the park. There is a lovely family feel to the zoo and you could definitely feel the sadness of the loss of Steve Irwin. We spoke to a guy called Fred who had planted the majority of the trees in the zoo with Steve Irwin and you could tell that he missed him so much. We walked underneath one of the stands of the Crocoseum (a large arena where they put on croc shows) and there was a long memorial fence there covered in Khaki shirts with well wishes written on them for his family and saying what a great guy Steve was. There was also lots of poetry and artwork depicting the great man. We also walked through an area in the zoo called Kangeroo Heaven where the Roo's are allowed to freely wander around and we could walk up to them and pat them. While we were there we also watched a show in the crocoseum featuring a particularly large Saltwater Crocodile being tempted with chunks of meat! Other highlights of the day included patting a Koala and the Otter show. We left late in the afternoon and stayed for the night in a free rest area that stunk due to the 'drop loos' that are popular over here. For those who have never had the 'pleasure' of experiencing them, they basically consist of a toilet that doesn't flush and the human waste basically drops down to a hole in the ground! Nice.
Thursday 19th April
Happy Birthday Auntie Muriel!. Headed in the morning to a town on the Sunshine Coast called Mooloolaba, a pretty little town with some swanky looking hotels and a lovely beach. Next destination was Maroochydore, where we purchased a memory card reader to make uploading pictures to a computer easier. We had a look around a few book stores and I managed to find the next book in a series of books that i'm reading. We then took a drive to Noosa Heads hoping to try out some surfing but unfortunately the sea was too calm so we had a stroll along the headland instead.
Friday 20th April
Drove to a town called Gympie where we had a little look around the town and found the messiest book store we had ever seen in our lives! Check out the picture we've uploaded in the photo section! Wasn't much else to see there so we drove further north to the historical town of Maryborough, which sprang up due to large amounts of gold being found in the area. There are several beautiful Victorian era buildings there including a railway station, an old Post Office and Hotel. Maryborough was a beautiful town and was a pleasure to visit. In the night we met up with Scott and Caz who were our friends we visited Moreton Island with. Spent the night drinking with them and laughing about in Childers. It was excellent to catch up with them again. They are currently fruit picking lemons in the area and earning more money than we did picking pears!
Today we are in Bundaberg and are planning to visit the famous rum distillery here. We both love Bundy Rum! Hope that you are well, we'll update you all again in around a week's time and give you another update on our adventures!
