Hello there avid journal readers! Darren and Kerry here again to update you all on our latest adventure.
We've just got back from a week-long camping adventure on beautiful, tropical Moreton Island. Whilst getting extremely stressed at finding a job, Scott and Caz, the couple who we met on the Gold Coast, got in touch with us and asked if we'd like to come on an adventure with them to Moreton Island in their 4X4. Of course we said yes and met with them early on Wednesday morning just North of Brisbane in a port called Scarborough.
We transferred all the things we would need over to their Land Cruiser and all squished in together to board the ferry, leaving our car behind in the secure car park. The ferry crossing was eventful, due to a large crowd of kids on board getting sea sick and spewing over the side of the boat! The crossing took about 3 hours, which went in no time as we nattered to Scott and Caz, soon becoming fast friends.
The ferry landed at Moreton Island beach and as soon as the car ramp touched down on the sand we drove off down the beach to start our adventure! Moreton Island is the third largest sand island in the world but don't let that fool you into thinking that the place is one big beach as the interior of the island is covered in forests, mangroves and little lagoons. The first camp we headed for was on the Eastern side of the island at a place called Blue Lagoon. Scott's 4X4 made pretty easy work of the dirt roads and it wasn't long before we were excitedly setting up our tents, literally only a stone's throw from the beach! Before heading to the beach though we decided to go for a quick dip in the Blue Lagoon from where the campsite derives it's name. The afternoon sun had made the water as warm as a bath and we lazed around in the water chatting and putting all those job searching stresses to the backs of our minds! We then headed back to camp to enjoy our first camp fire together until we promptly got rained on! This pretty much put an end to the evening so we retired to our beds.
The second day pretty much revolved around checking out the beach next to where we were camped. The noticeable difference from the West beach where the ferry lands is that the East beach is constantly pounded by waves and enjoyed spending pretty much half the day body surfing and larking about in the water. Unfortunately our beach ball, which we aptly named Wilson after the volley ball in Cast Away, decided to do a runner with the wind down the beach leaving me to scream'Wilson!!' all the way down the beach in a Tom Hanks style! In the evening we found a coconut in our campsite, which we think had floated all the way from Fiji, seeing that there were no coconut trees in sight. Scott decided to get his axe and cut it open only to find the contents stunk to high heaven leaving the camp with a rather nasty pong!
On the third day we moved our camp back to the West side of the island to an even better campsite which overlooked the calm turquoise waters. During our time in this camp over four days we went on a long walk up to a ship wreck, did some spear fishing with Scotts spear and lounged around in the warm water. We also drove down to a place called Tangalooma one night and watched some friendly dolphins come in to the bay to be hand fed. The highlight of adventure though was yesterday seeing a dolphin swimming only a little way out from where our camp was so Kerry and I decided to swim out and get a better look and managed to swim within 10 feet of it, and watched it rolling around playfully in the water. It was an incredible experience and one we will never forget.
A funny moment one of the nights was purchasing some potatos from the local shop to cook in the camp fire. We waited hours for them to cook and finally at 10 o'clock at night we decided to pull them out of the embers and see if they were ok to eat. With our tummy's rumbling we opened the foil only to find out they were only half cooked. We all cracked up with laughter as we tried to eat them but we all ended up throwing them into the woods! We also had our fair share of scares duying our visit to the island including Kerry spotting a highly venomous King Brown snake next to our camp site and one night around the camp fire I had a Huntsman spider jump on me, not a nice experience! The time on the island was also a good chance for Kerry to be girly again, spending lots of time painting her toe nails with Caz while me and Scott hunted for fish in the water with the spear.
Also a highlight was a group of friendly Kookaburra's flying down next to our tents and allowing us to hand fed them, which was a pretty special thing. Also twice the battery died on the cruiser due to us listening to the radio too much and we had to be jump started. We've also got some great photos to upload over the next couple of days onto the journal, which we're sure you will all love.
This morning we said our goodbyes to Scott and Caz, although i'm sure we will meet up with them again somewhere along the road. We have also recieved a mesage from Warner Brothers to contact them about casual work at the theme park so tomorrow we will phone them, although time is running short for us now as we have some big distances to cover. We've been looking at the map and we still have to get up to Cairns, which is 1600km away and also fit in our diving on the barrier reef and get across to Darwin and then down through the middle of the country, so there's some serious distances to cover in only two and half months.
Anyway that's all for now, update you all soon!
