G'day from Queensland people! Darren and Kerry here again to let you know we're not in jail yet and are still on the run from nasty parking bay attendants! We're currently looking into changing our indentities and our number plates.... only joking, but the thought is tempting!
Well, since we left Byron Bay we headed straight up North across the border into Queensland and headed for Surfers Paradise, stopping over night in a rest area called Sleepy Hollow(!!) where we saw lots of huge Cane Toads. We both had pictured Surfers Paradise in our minds as being lively but not too over the top. How wrong could we have been??! Surfers Paradise is full of high rise resorts and flashy neon lights and teenagers running around; apparently this is main resort area for Oz! We had a look around the town to try and find work in the many bars however most of them were full of plasticky looking people and closely resembling strip joints! Yes it's true to say that I got punched by Kerry numerous times for looking at the ladies so by the end of our first night there we still had no job and I had a bruised arm too!
We decided to stay a little way out of Surfers Paradise itself in a little area called Miami in one of the caravan parks. The caravan park was nice enough despite our tent being infested with ants every day! There is also a guy who keeps walking around in just a towell who I have dubbed Half Naked Man and an overweight lady who only ever seems to wear the same black bikini, morning, noon and night! She has been given the name Black Bikini Lady. We have spent the last couple of days there applying to jobs and generally feeling pretty rejected and exhasperated. We have applied to some of the theme parks in the area (Dreamworld, Wet and Wild, Movie World and Sea World) but at the moment they're not really looking for many staff as the Christmas period is over. We have also applied to the Gold Coast version of Draculas Caberet, the show we saw in Melbourne, as apparently they're looking for staff so we should hear from them by the end of the week. We'd both love a job there as they make you up each night in ghoulish makeup and then you stay in character while you serve drinks and food. Fingers crossed for that one! Might also give me some ideas for the bar I want to set up when I get home!
Yesterday was Sunday so we couldn't apply to too many places so we hit the surf down at Corrumbin Beach, which is a beautiful beach with the warmest sea water we've experienced in Australia so far. In the evening we chilled out drinking cheap Bourbon Whiskey with a lovely couple we have met on the park called Caz and Scott. Scott is an Ozzie who has been working in England for the last couple of years and Caz is from Manchester and is over here in Oz for a year to work and see the country.
This morning we packed up the tent and headed for Brisbane, arriving here at about 1 o'clock in the afternoon. We've sent our CV to a few recruitment companies so hopefully they'll come back to us with something within the next couple of days. Tonight we're going to trawl round some of the bars and see if we can find some work that way, although in Australia you need an RSA certificate to be able to work behind the bar, which costs $65 to take. Hopefully though they'll have some waitressing or glass collecting work.
Well that's all for now, keep your fingers crossed for us that the dream job comes along for us and REMEMBER, if you get any phone calls from Australian parking attendants, you haven't seen or heard from us right?!
