Suos Rie(hello)
Yesterday I had a really excellent day at work, I spent most of the morning making beautiful silk bags, they are starting to trust that I can actually sew now!The way they handle the fabric though is just awful, they cut it out on the floor to start and they are just so rough with it, but I suppose it doesn't cost that much out here where as in England it would be about 10 pound a metre!
At lunch time we threw a supprise birthday party for Thai Ly. They fed me first in their kitchen before she came in, it was horrible so I ended up just eating plain rice, but they all really enjoyed it so I felt quite bad. We ate , all 15 of us squeezed onto the kitchen floor out of what looked like dog bowls(no comments!!lol!) with flies buzzing around everywhere and they had washed the bowls up in a bucket of dirty water on the bathroom floor, but I keep telling myself that its all part of the experience!!
Thai Ly was so pleased about the party, they all had presents for her and had made her the most wonderful cake! We went through all the Khmere birthday traditions, lighting an incense stick and walking it around the birthday girl, praying before she cut the cake and then it is tradition for her to feed us each a piece of her cake and to take photos! It was a really lovely celebration to be a part of!
We had our Khmere lesson in the evening which I think everyone was really too tiered for but it was quite good anyway, we learnt directions and how to ask the motos to take you somewhere, Im trying to use it as much as possible to try and remember it all, its so difficult! Only a small few at CHA speak english so I really want to learn as much Khmere as possible, they look so pleased when you try to do it, but will also laugh a lot if you say the wrong thing, but you get used to it!
This morning I have been trying to make a traditional blouse though I have had to cut the pieces out just by looking and measuring from an already made garment and no one has given me an order to do it in or helped me at all, its really hard, its quite complicated, I'm probably going to get told its all wrong when I go back in a minute because the girl that usually makes them is coming in, oh well!! I just helped out with another English lesson, its really good fun, and the teacher and me have been talking for ages, she says she really likes it because it helps her English accent.
Got to go back to work now, thank god at the moment its not raining, its been awful recently, last night was horrible, we had thunder storms as well!
Will speak soon
lots of love
