I slept till noon! Everyone else was up and drinking - coffee this time - and I slowly climbed down to the kitchen .. And Alice popped in to wish us a happy new year. And she brought coffee! Good, strong, coffee. And croissants! Oh boy .. I'm going to spend the next six months losing the weight I've gained on this trip! Since everything is closed today we took the time to get organized and start washing clothes and packing... So sad! But it is time to head home...3 more days... One more night in Verona, one in Venice, and one at the New York airport (coming in late, leaving early). But if course we still have to eat dinner so we drove in to Verona proper to Ristorante Enoteca Cangrande that Patrick found on Trip Advisor and it is such a charming room! We found that they had a variety of amarone on the menu, and we had our waiter (the owner) choose one for the food we ordered. We started chatting and he mentioned that he had been filmed by Rick Steves. He pulled out his phone and started playing the video - and son of a gun - I had seen that episode! I knew the owner looked familiar! When the wine arrived we were so happy with it! The 2008 Filippini amarone della valpolicella was full bodied, fruity and soooo good- and they served us cheese parmigiana with balsamic vinegar as an amuse bouche. Wonderful! Then our appetizer- duck ravioli with truffles and an amarone chocolate sauce that we all agreed we should have had as a main course, it was that good. Next came fresh out of the oven rolls and my beef cheeks on polenta with an amarone reduction- so rich and flavorful! Joey's lasagna bolognese was creamy, Patrick had the cannelloni that was cheesy goodness. Lindsey ordered orecchiette with lemon zest and tuna that was so smooth and light. We were full but had to try dessert: white chocolate and liquorice cake was amazing, with a light touch on the licorice, and my dinner partners said it could make them fans of licorice... Patrick ordered a dish with grappa ice cream and boy did it taste like grappa! I'm not a fan but Patrick really is, and loved it! We were offered a few after dinner drinks - patrick of course chose grappa as did Lindsey- Joey passed, but I tried the acqua Di cedro, a liquore similar to limoncello but I think more clear and light. Hollywood Orchard, let's find a recipe for this!! We walked back to the car (and it was freezing! Literally!) and tried to exit the parking garage and couldn't figure out how to pay...Lindsey realized she left her wallet in the restaurant- and she ran out of the car. By the time Lindsey returned we had asked someone how and where we pay, so we could take off. Back to finish packing! And sleep ...
