So i woke up this morning just as it started to get light, so i assume about 5-5:30am, having had a better sleep than expected.
I sorted the car out as quietly as I could, and moved the 200m down the road to the beach car park. I had my Weetbix for breakfast as usual and checked the surf. As I expected there was some swell around and there was a light offshore breeze, but there was no real bank for it to break on, so it was just a big close out. I could see someone out in the water about 600-700m up the beach though, so I just hopped in the car and moved to another little car park up there. Sure enough it was much better, so got the Wettie on and paddled out.
It was actually better than I expected, it was just glassy and still, then a nice 2/3ft set would come though, and then all be still again. Its so nice being out that early in the morning, when it was like the city was still sleeping. I had a little scare about half way though the session, when a grey fin appeared between me and the shore, but then anther one appeared and it was just dolphins playing around in the waves.
After about 2 hours the high tide killed it, and the wind was starting to pick up cross/onshore about 8:30am, so I got out. I decided I would spend the day down at Burleigh Heads, only 10 minutes drive south, as you can walk around the headland and there is a beach etc. Unfortunately the swell direction was wrong, so the famous point break wasn't working, but it was cool to see all the same.
Having done the nice walk around the headland, I had some lunch back at the car, and then spent the rest of the afternoon on a big grassy hill above the beach. I was a nice temperature laying in the sun reading my book with the sea breeze, and I got so engrossed in the book I didn't move until about 4pm.
I had put suncream on a couple of times to make sure I didn't burn which worked as planned...apart from the 4 inch strip across my shoulder blades where I physically can not reach, so I have a brown back with a red strip!
I got a text from Natalja, one of my friends from Spot X, saying that she had moved to Board Beach in Surfers today, which was perfect timing for us to meet up. She said she would be all moved in by 7pm and ready to do stuff, so said we'd go out for a few drinks.
About 4pm I went off and bought some food for this evening and the next couple of days, then went off and cooked up dinner at a little BBQ area at the top of beach between Burleigh and Broadbeach.
Just when I was ready to go and meet Natalja she text saying her new house mates had sprung a surpsie welcome BBQ for her and wouldn't be able to make it. Its a shame as it would have been great to catch up, but oh well, I might catch her on the way back north in a couple of months as she has a perminant job there.
Instead of going back up to Broadbeach I headed about half an hour south, and spent the night in Coolangatta. I found a quiet side street behind the world famous 'Kirra' point break, and slept there the next.
