David's Travels
After 3 days of partying on Koh Phangan, we dragged ourselves off the island along with thousands of other partygoers for our long decent back into Malaysia, so Stu and I could check out the East Coast and Henson could fly back from Singapore. Travelling in the south of Thailand seems to be far worse than anywhere else. Anything south of where we were up until the Malaysia border was only accessable by yet another DVT Bus! The English boys were throw on the back seat and as Stu's 6' 5", it was a fun four hours including the lack of suspension and the enourmous pot-hole every 20 seconds....I now think I have minor spinal injuries! Add to this an overnight train journey that ranks as the worst in my life to date and you will understand, it was a memorable journey! After being propositioned by a ladyboy at a service station we eventully arrived back in Malaysia and normality! We had to spend the night in Kota Bharu before taking the night coach to Mersing (much better transport in Malaysia), where Henson left us and Stu and I took the speed boat to Pulau Tioman. We chose the most lively part of the island to go to, and if you consider numerous German couples to be lively, it certainly was! In any case, after our crap journeys, it was good to chill out for a few days. Before I continue, have I mentioned Malaysia's obsession with Shakira, Avril Lavigne and power balads - most notably, Brian Adams.....beautiful. They're everywhere and I've seen men with Avril t-shirts on, good work! Brian Adams has been a fixture in our travels since Singapore, he's played everywhere and at one point in Kuala Lumpur, I saw a man singing Everything I do I do it for you in a karaoke bar, it was a great moment! Sorry, I'll continue now, but the osession is weird! We had a nice beachfront chalet and there were numerous BBQs selling fresh fish which were delicious. We had shark on the first night, and it was the nicest fish I've tried - yes Dad, it tasted of chicken!! On other nights I tried tuna, squid and kingfish, all good, but nothing compared to the shark. Whilst stuffing shark in our faces, we decided to take the restaurant owner up on his offer of a snorkeling trip the next day. It was amazing and in such clear waters and we went on the speed boat to a place called Corl Island, as well as Monkey Bay - no monkeys thankfully as the tide was in! We saw thousands of stunning fish, none of which I could name (check photos) and were also assured there were sharks we'd see - we didn't, however a German girl did which was slightly disappointing. First to the sun-loungers, first to the sharks!!! There were also turtles, we only saw one when we were back on the boat unfortunately, but it was still amazing. To cap the day off in good style, I got stung by a jellyfish!! Tioman was a really nice place and great for diving, as for the "lively" aspect, that seemed to have gone missing while we were there! I think after the madness of the Full-Moon party, me and Stu are craving more....hence us heading towards Thailand again to meet Pete and Dave!!!!
