With the trouble in South Thailand and stories I'd heard from other travelers about not being able to cross the Malaysia-Thailand border, I opted for the safe option of a trip back to Kuala Lumpur and a direct flight to Phuket which was cheap and quick. Looking back it would probably have been fine going through the south, but I got another day in KL, so it was all good!
After getting the boat back to the mainland, I took a taxi to Kota Bharu and as I needed to get there asap to ensure I got a bus ticket to KL, my mad taxi driver undercut 2 lanes of traffic (it was only a one lane road, the second lane was undercutting that and we undercut them!!) then went round road works the wrong way! I'm up to date on my Malaysian traffic laws, but I'm sure that's not allowed - anyway, I appreciated it as I got there in time to get a ticket!
I took an overnight bus from Kota Bharu (not so much fun when they sit you next to the driver who chats to his mate for the entire 9 hour journey!) and arrived in KL at about 6am so had plenty of time to kill before my 2pm flight. I queued up again for the trip up the Petronas Towers after the crap weather when I last went up and lugged my backpack around a few shopping centres before nearly missing my flight by being dropped at the wrong terminal!!! Cheers Mr Taxi Driver! Luckily the flight was delayed and after removing half the contents of my bag to get it within the weight limit, I was on my way to Phuket!
