David's Travels
So the travels have started.... I wasn't looking forward to flying at all, firstly because I hate flying and secondly, 13hrs on a plane is just too much! It turned out OK though, I actually enjoyed the flight. Not sure where my Dad got it from that British Airways has the nicest stewardesses, my flight was full of short gay Scotish men! Can't fault them though, they kept the beer flowing...
I arrived here on Thursday around 5pm local time having just eaten breakfast on the plane! It has to be said that the airport is the cleanest and most efficient I've experienced. I think it took 40mins for me to get off the plane, walk through the airport, get my bag - which came out straight away - and arrive at the hostel by taxi. This place only got better.
I met up with Stu and Henson (real name Tom - Stu's mate) in the hostel and went for a few beers as I was pretty shattered from the flight. The hostel's really good and has pretty much everything you need. If you step out of the front door of this place, not only are you hit by the heat, but hundreds of prostitutes that walk in and out of all the "Karioke" bars all night! On Friday we took a trip into town to look at some shops on Orchard Road before returning to meet up with some people from the hostel for our tour of China Town, provided free by the hostel. It was really good and the girl that took us around certainly knows her stuff; 5 hours walking nearly killed me though as jet lag began to set in!
Singapore is so clean, the people are so friendly and everything runs on time and works properly, England, take note... I don't have a single bad word to say about it. Like the guide book says, "if you leave your bag on the floor and walk off, you're more likely to have someone running after you with it, than running away with it!". It's just a breath of fresh air compared to Birmingham, think I might come and work here (Don't quote me on that though, I'll probably say it about every other place I go to that isn't England!). They impose fines for just about everything, chewing gum is illigal and it's the death penalty for possesion of drugs. They don't mess around here, and that's why it's so good, everyone sticks to the law and they're overly helpful if you ask them a question!
On Saturday we went back into town for another look around and the Visa got swiped a few too many times. There's too many nice trainers and clothes that you can't get back home. In the evening we went off to Ministry of Sound club that was opened earlier this year and Wally Lopez was playing there (for those of you that are interested and bothered!). We got to the club about midnight and the woman on the door asked us all for ID...great! Nobody had any so it was a taxi all the way back to the hostel to pick up Passports! On our return to the club, guess what... straight in with no questions, did't even have to show the ID we'd just done a $25 round trip for! That didn't put a dampner on the night and we had a really good time (check the photos!). After being turned away because they didn't think we were 18, we went straight into the 25 and over room and proceeded to act like 12 year olds. Why break the habit of a lifetime! All in all an absolute quality night and the women here are something else... That's if they are women, i'll say nothing Henson! (Photo of that to come, a photo's all that happened thankfully for him!!!). Stu and I lost Henson and got a cab back on our own. He got completely lost and two kids who were in the club walked him to the Metro station, helped him get a ticket and directed him to the hostel.....see what I mean about being helpful. In Birmingham they would've robbed him!!!
It took a while to get out of bed on Sunday and when we eventually did, it was off to the World Famous Raffles Hotel to continue the drinking with a Singapore Sling. The Long Bar is really nice although it's full of tourists who are there for the same reason! When the waitress came to our table and asked what we wanted, I said "have a guess" and she just looked unimpressed. They must hate the English in there! (People who have been to the Hibernian, in particular Pete, James, Dad and Dave, check out the couple in the background of the picture of all 3 of us with our drinks... Bogul bogul - How weird is that? 6000 miles and there's a bar girl who works 100yrds from my front door!!!). Because of the time difference, I was able to watch the mighty Villa work their way into 2nd with a 2-0 win over Newcastle in the evening. Good to see old Randy in the crowd...Cleveland Browns till I die!!! Also chatted to a guy from Sutton Coldfield who had just been to Thailand so he was able to give us some good tips for our onward journey.
Today we've just chilled down the beach with a football, showing the people of Sinapore a few tricks! I've picked up a few more moves from Henson, he's like Ronaldinho on the Nike adverts! We're moving onto Malaysia tonight and fingers crossed getting on a late coach to Kuala Lumpur that'll get us there in the early hours tomorrow. I'll be putting more posts up as I go so check back for new photos and journal entries. I might also add to this because I'm bound to have missed stuff out!
Until then, laters! I'd like to say I was missing you all, but this place is too good (the price of the beer is the only downside). You've gotta check out Singapore. Hope everyone's well. Take care. x
