Day 15 - Another fine day saw us leave Clevedon behind. Our initial plan was to get to Lands End but that was another 180 miles further south west which meant that we would be retracing our steps for about 120 miles. Unfortunately time did not allow us to do this, so we decided to head east from Clevedon towards London. We went back towards Bristol on the M5, joined the M4 which took us east towards our next stop at Bath. An interesting place to drive in with its very narrow streets and no where to park except in designated council car parks (pay & display of course and they don't miss you with their prices ). Two pound in another machine gave us a local map of the town, so off we went on foot to explore what the town of Bath had to offer. Downtown was busy with some great musical buskers drawing good crowds. We found the Roman baths displaying some extremely old documents and coins which have been unearthed only a block away from where we were. Unfortunately the wait to get in was over a half an hour and at 11pounds each & not a lot of time we decided it was a no. Next to the baths was the magnificent Bath Abbey. Activities in the abbey date back to 676AD. It would have taken us hours to read all the inscriptions on the wall as well as on the floor. Mid afternoon we were back on the road & heading 30 miles to Stonehenge. A unique circle of big stones in the middle of a paddock and miles from any town. Equipped with our audio tour devices we joined the hundreds of people and walked around in a very large well trodden circle to view these mysterious formations. They evolved around 3000BC and many theories have been put forward as to their exact purpose. They have discovered that some of the stones cast shadows that align with other stones during midsummer sunrises and midwinter sunsets. We weren't going to stay around to see if they were right. We left here in late afternoon and decided that Winchester (about 30 minutes down the road) would be a good place to call it a day. We called into a local pub to ask about local B&B's. The owner was straight on the phone making enquiries for us and found a very nice place for us just down the road. It turned out to be an old coach house very tastefully restored and full of antiques (but no coffee making facilities L). We dropped our bags & headed back to the pub for dinner, to repay the owner for his help.
