Hello everyone, sorry we havent updated in a while we have been sailing around the whitsunday islands for the past 4 days and have only just got chance to update.
Arrived at Airlie Beach late at night and checked into our worst accomodation yet - a dorm room with about 5 single lads just ready to go out on the p**s at 11:30pm and came stumbling in at 4am deciding to have a shower after their return! We wouldnt have minded had we not just travelled on a bus for about 5 hours. Still the next day we spent looking around a very cloudy and quite gloomy looking Airlie Beach, did manage to get a few pics to give you an idea of the place, we were quite disappointed with the place as it was more like Ibiza than a cosy little seaside resort, too many single lads and girs for us couples.
We checked into our Whitsundays Island Yacht - Pacific Star at around 7 on Saturday night and got to meet the crew and some of the guys on board. Took it easy on the first night just had a few Carlton Colds and some rose wine before taking a well deserved kip in our ever-so cosy but tiny cabin. The next day was a gloomy one too, overcast and slightly wet - disappointing as we visited the nicest beach yet - Whitehaven beach which is 99% silica based sand and feels kinda squeky when you walk on it.
We got a bit of snorkelling done in the afternoon and I (Dan) even tried my hand at scuba diving, unfortunately I couldnt get deeper than about 4-5m as my ears couldnt take the water pressure and I couldnt equalise - i was gutted! We did manage to see some pretty cool fish and marine life which kinda made up for it. We had a nice meal on board - which was a roast dinner with veggies and beef - shell had potato, pasta and bread... hmmmm.....
On our next day we woke and to our amazement it was actually really hot and sunny! yay! The first really nice weather on the "sunshine coast", sunshine my arse. We had breakfast whilst moored up on the great barrier reef and I have got to say snorkelling around the reef has to be one of the must-do experiences you can possibly imagine. It was truly amazing, we must have saw every form of tropical fish in Australia and also got to see a white pointed reef shark - we were a little bit scared as it was over 2m long and about a metre beneath our feet!
The day just got better and better for us, it was about 38 degrees and gorgeous sunny weather and headed for Hamelin Bay to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets - Shell on the other hand was sea sick and curled up in bed so I had to make do with seeing it alone. The following day was our final day and we snorkelled in a bay known as "the fish pond" due to the mass amount of fish that were in the bay, not as impressive as the reef but very nice to see. We had the opportunity to sunbathe in the afternoon at a really impressive beach, opposite a 6star resort where us scummy lot couldnt swim!
We headed back to Airlie beach at around 4pm and onward to the bus station for our overnight bus journey down to Hervey Bay ready for our self drive tour on Fraser Island - cant wait!!!
Glad to hear your all doin well back home, good luck Netty hope everything goes well for you both up north, watch them geordies!! Happy birthday Claire, apologies its a bit late but we have only just got on here to update for the first time in weeks!!
